My practice focuses on working with people struggling with issues concerning anger management, impulsivity, chronic shame, divorce, relationships, anxiety, depression, overwhelmingness, identity, and sexuality.
Isolation is the killer. For many, influences to pivot away from isolation and towards healing, connection, and growth are complex, challenging, and hopeful. My clients are invited to explore their “painful wounds” and discover how their pain’s influence leads to self-identity issues, certain behaviors, relationship constraints, and patterns that decrease movement toward growth. Growth towards living with a whole heart of emotions, less ambiguity, finding increased purpose, and engaged relationships. Growth towards self-compassion and employing in their lives what they value most.

The frequency and intensity divorce-related feelings can cause us to question our sanity. Not only are these feelings normal, they are helping us create the space that's needed for new connections to develop. It is in this space that group support can be most helpful. Our group is a safe, supportive place to explore the complex feelings associated with separation and/or divorce. Together, we will support one another through the challenges, celebrate one another's accomplishments and explore future hopes and dreams. Up-to-date group details can be found on my website: www.drjillgross.com.

When we tend lovingly to our grief, transitions like death, separation, divorce, and mid-life challenges can actually be invitations to live more fully.
When the unwanted or unexpected happens, it is as if the whole world has imploded. If left untended, grief can show up in ways that don't serve us. We can lose ourselves in alcohol, sleep, work--anything to numb the pain. Some of us lash out or withdraw from the people and things that give our lives meaning (e.g., family, friends, community). It doesn't have to be this way! I specialize in helping people whose lives have been affected by illness or death, separation or divorce, and mid-life issues (parenting struggles, caring for aging parents, etc.).

I have been in practice for 18 years. Life can get messy and complicated, sometimes we just need a little help coping. We all have the potential to be living fully; experience joy even during times of trials. I work with people individually, and in relationships that struggle to effectively communicate their needs. Because of how they were brought up, or conditioned through experience, they might have vastly different ways of showing up in relationships, especially through conflict. We all want to work on what drives our behavior so that we can better understand ourselves and each other. This allows us to be vulnerable with one another and experience our real selves, so we can connect and love on a much deeper and more meaningful and satisfying level.

Divorce Support Groups

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
