We're a group of therapists who have come together to treat the neurodiverse community with respect, develop a robust set of tools to help neurodiverse couples, approach neurodiverse healing from a strength-based approach. We understand that the trauma of past misunderstanding needs to be healed in a gentle way, share best practices for neurodiverse therapy amongst the team so we can offer you a beneficial experience, and offer integrated therapy where the couple and both individuals can each get their own counselor; yet, the therapy itself is synchronized to move to the same goals. I also have run for the past 20 years a therapeutic program for high functioning preschool, school age and middle school students on the Autism Spectrum and their parents.
My ideal client is a child or adolescent who is aware of the issues that are bothering them and want help. These are clients whose parents are comfortable with them seeing a therapist and are able to speak openly with them about their diagnoses. When I am asked how long I see a client, I do not give a definite time since I have learned that issues are challenged as they make the transition to new schools or jobs. I let parents know that I take a developmental approach to psychopathology. We may stop when symptoms decrease and their coping capacity increases. If they return it is not a sign of failure but different stresses.

Life is constantly presenting us with change. Just when we might feel like we know what the day will bring, there might be something around the corner that takes us by surprise; maybe even something that has been there that we didn't even notice before! With change, comes thoughts and feelings we might not be ready to have, such anxiety, sadness, and fear. Coping with these changes can be difficult at times and we might need a little support. One of these unexpected events might be the diagnosis of a developmental delay, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Group members will have the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences and challenges. Group members will be encouraged to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in an affirming, strengths-based and non-judgmental environment. On the outside you put on a good show for the world. Yet on the inside, you feel alone and broken. Never good enough. You suffer in agonizing silence, and you're terrified of the moment when everyone figures out you are a fraud. These feelings are very old and familiar because they come from your childhood experiences. And while you can't change the past, you CAN change your experience of the present. You can heal from old wounds. I know because I've walked that road and I know there is another side. In addition to traditional therapy I am certified in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) which can deepen your healing journey.

Are you feeling stuck or overwhelmed? Do you long for a greater sense of well-being and/or fulfillment in life? When our needs are unmet or injured, it can result in distorted thinking and ineffective behaviors. We may feel unable to move past anxiety, depression, grief, fear, despair, anger, or trauma, and move into self-protection, isolation, or avoidance in order to cope. By creating a nurturing, nonjudgmental environment where it's safe to express feelings and emotions, I believe that we will identify root issues and move beyond coping to restoration. What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
