Anxiety Support Groups in Sherman Oaks, CA

We offer multiple weekly DBT Skills Groups that meet at a variety of different times throughout the week. These groups meet criteria for adherent DBT therapy. All participants need to be enrolled in individual weekly therapy (even if outside our services) or need to be engaged in comprehensive DBT in order to participate. The group covers the 4 modules in DBT: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. One round of skills takes about 6-7 months to complete; we recommend 2 rounds of skills if possible. Joining the group is a big commitment and takes motivation and hard work.

With more than 20 years of experience, we have a team of skilled, fully trained DBT therapists who offer individual therapy, DBT Groups, couples, and family therapy. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, is a type of behavioral therapy that helps those struggling with emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance issues. While it is very effective at treating those diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), it can also be very effective at treating those with depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, substance use and a variety of other symptoms. In fact, the skills taught in the group can be effective for almost any individual. For those seeking comprehensive DBT, our program includes weekly individual DBT therapy, group therapy, phone coaching, and family consultation as needed. Individual DBT therapists participate in a weekly consultation team with other trained DBT therapists. Clients who participate in all of these components will meet the criteria for a fully treatment adherent DBT program.

A group for young professional women with anxiety. During the 10 years I have worked with young professional women in LA, I have noticed some patterns. Ive noticed that hard work, being capable and kicking butt in the professional world often goes hand-in-hand with high levels of anxiety and sometimes depression. This group is designed to help you hop off the stress hamster wheel and thrive as a young professional. Added bonuses: reduced anxiety, increase coping skills, comfort and ease in your work life, promotions, new positions, being a part of a community of women and being of service others.

Our therapists are highly trained in treating trauma, substance abuse, addictions and mental health disorders such as mood and anxiety disorders, relational issues, codependency, sex and love addiction and other process addictions.
When our emotional life is out of balance or unregulated we often find ourselves repeating patterns that become self-defeating. These self-defeating patterns can leave us feeling anxious, unsatisfied, or depressed, and often lead to low self-esteem. We may feel shame, the feeling that something is deeply wrong with me or that I am defective, different, or not good enough. When these emotions are untreated we may isolate or seek relationships hoping they will make us better. We have found that generally when a person experiences different types of trauma, distress and dysregulation caused by trauma can lead to other manifestations of the pain including addiction, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and attachment difficulties. We may compulsively eat, use drugs or alcohol, spend, or over work. We may find we walk through life always ready for the other shoe to drop, full of tension and anxiety or even experiencing panic attacks. Or we may find that we have lost interest in things that once brought us joy and live our lives feeling sad or numb.

Having issues with your teens? The adolescent years can be brutal, especially for teens today who feel pressured by their peers and social media. As Dr. Stephen Illardi points out, we simply weren't designed to live in such a fast-paced plugged in society. I help teens navigate thoughts and emotions that overwhelm them so that they can feel confident in their skin. The teens I work with go on to enjoy both emotional and academic success. I work with women as well. If you're going through a major life transition like divorce, career change, or postpartum challenges, I'd love to work with you!

Medical problems, whether chronic or accident related, change the direction of your life. This group allows you to unload the distress of dealing with whatever the condition may be, and then find ways to live constructively and positively with whatever limitations have been imposed upon you ... and maybe find that some limitations have been self-imposed and can be altered! We support each other through a structured format and group interaction. Requires an individual interview session, and a commitment to attend a minimum of 4 sessions, for continuity and cohesion of the group. Groups are scheduled periodically, when a sufficient number of participants are available.

You don't have to deal with the symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem and relationship problems alone. Group therapy provides an ideal environment to heal and grow. Most symptoms are affected by the relationships in your life. Understanding yourself and how you engage in relationships is the work of group therapy. Group therapy improves our functioning in all these relationships, easing the symptoms that arise from unsatisfying relationships.

Anxiety Support Groups

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
