This group helps members more effectively express their feelings, receive support from those with similar issues, and learn new information about the substances they are struggling with. It reduces the sense of isolation that is felt that often can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues which can feed substance use or addiction. It offers opportunity to have a sense of community without shame.

Life has a way of testing us in ways we never imagined—whether it’s battling addiction, enduring the weight of grief and loss, coping with chronic pain, or facing the complexities of mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. As a therapist, my deepest belief is that no matter how dark things may seem, healing and transformation are always possible. Healing is not a one-size-fits-all process, and I tailor my approach to meet your individual needs, drawing on proven therapeutic techniques as well as the wisdom that comes from listening deeply to your story.

Addiction psychology, alcohol and drug counseling is what we do. I am unusual as a director of this practice because I am 1) a psychologist 2) a certified alcohol and drug counselor and 3) I'm over 30 years sober myself but 4) I don't insist that people be sober if they don't want to be or aren't ready. This approach is called, "harm reduction". While we offer counseling for compulsive behaviors like, gambling, internet, computer and gaming addictions, our focus is relationships, depression, anxiety and other mental health & psychological treatment & counseling. We each have specific specialties and practice very similarly.

My passion is working with clients who desire to recover from substance use disorders. I work with early, middle, and late stage recovery candidates - both individuals and their families. My primary focus is the use of individual & group interventions to assist with the recognition of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral triggers which cause relapse. These paramount issues when resolved can lead to freedom from the bondage of addiction. I also specialize in grief/loss, anxiety & depressive disorders, building healthy relationships, and co-dependency. My mission is simple - to help others with compassion, empathy, & respect.

Alcohol Use Support Groups

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
