I incorporate elements of Play Therapy and Art Therapy into my usual approach when working with children/young people, as it best suits my young clients' needs.
I am a Nelson-based Psychotherapist offering short-term and long-term psychotherapy for adults, children and young people. My approach to working in therapy relies mainly on psychodynamic theories; meaning that I believe our early experiences (such as those encountered during our childhood and adolescence) have a significant impact on us. We may search for patterns in your life, to better understand what may be causing and perpetuating your problems. In long-term therapy it is crucial that you come to trust me, to share these often very personal memories and experiences.

Kia Ora! My name is Jess and I am a somatic counsellor, sensorimotor psychotherapist, and creative arts therapist. I work with adult clients across the whole wellbeing spectrum: from people who want to get more out of their life, find a deeper sense of self, or connect to their body; to those that have experienced trauma, struggling with basic tasks of daily living. Many have found traditional cognition based talk therapy less helpful or do not know yet how to put their experiences into words. No matter your reasons or motivations, I am here to create a space in which we can explore where you are, what you want, and what you need.

The experience of engaging in counselling is a deeply personal journey that affects all of us in different ways, and sometimes in ways we would never have expected. By us talking together through your concerns, counselling can support you to see solutions you didn’t know were there. It can also help you find ways to manage better and move on in your life I understand and honour that each person’s story is unique in that we are all affected by life in different ways. I also understand the importance of being respectful of each person’s culture and belief systems.

Talk therapy is available but for clients who have had talk therapy in the past and believe they have benefitted as much as they can from it, and are looking for something different, I offer art therapy too.
My clients often find themselves not being able to sleep so well or they have not been enjoying their favourite activities like before. They also find themselves reflecting on specific moments such as past interactions with family and/or friends and wondered if any of what they have experienced affect the way they feel, think and behave at present times. I then notice that when starting therapy, my clients feel that they are ready to commit consistently to search for answers to why they feel this way, how can they cope better with these difficult emotions, how can they feel safe and loved again.

Successful counselling is based on the quality of the relationship between myself (the therapist) and you (the client). My approach is based on deep respect and non-judgemental acceptance for all people I work with. Utilising an element of creativity within therapy enables you to speak through art making, and reflection, because sometimes spoken words don’t exist for your experience. In my practice I offer counselling and arts therapy, professional supervision and coaching, and career development.

I work with children and adults using Art therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), Interactive Drawing Technique (IDT) with a parts approach, talk therapy, somatic methods, mindfulness and sand tray. I find these modalities, within a supportive therapeutic relationship, help people who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and loss, attachment and relationship struggles and who need to recover from traumatic experiences.

Many people reach a point where they need professional help. They may describe themselves as 'stuck' or bewildered or fearful. For many adults seeking therapy, their repetitive behaviour patterns are causing real distress. The issues may centre in their work, their homes or their own fears and worries. When we realise that we may benefit from non judgmental help this is the first step to change for us. Anxiety and low mood frequently develop in response to challenges and worry. I can help you to prioritise, balance your life and respond in a sustainable way to what is making life so hard.

Art Therapy Counsellors

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
