I am a qualified, experienced Systemic Therapist, DBT therapist and Clinical Supervisor with a flexible approach, which includes solution focused, psychodynamic, narrative and behavioural ideas and I also have a specialism in Substance misuse / drug and alcohol addiction/dependency.
Emotional well being is something we can often take for granted, and more often than not we do not take time to attend to our emotional well being until we begin to struggle to maintain a balance. You may just need some space to reflect safely and without judgement. Perhaps you are overwhelmed by the pressures of life, stuck in a rut, repeating negative patterns, or trying to find a way out of anxiety or depression. Maybe you just don’t feel able to share your worries and concerns with those around you? Maybe you just don’t feel like ‘you’ and would like to explore why, or you have feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness.

My clients often tell me, that they feel exhausted because they have been carrying around a problem for a long time. If that sounds like you, then I'm here to tell you it's OK. Let me share the load, and help you put it down and unpack it. I can offer you a warm, friendly space to carefully explore what you're carrying. It might be you are struggling with a relationship, a loss, anxiety, anger, lack of confidence or sense of identity. Or maybe you're not even sure what it is. As both a teacher and counsellor, I have supported adults and young people with many of life's issues. You can bring anything to me no matter how big or small.

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. Sessions are delivered through a person-centered strength-based perspective. This means that in our session we focus on YOUR needs/wants/wishes through directive and none-directive dialogues/assessments/goal setting (where relevant) and, consequently, the building of a ‘resilience toolbox’ as a means to manage future stress, anxiety and/or trauma.

Who are you? Where are you going? If you're not sure, trauma could be translating. Ever felt your life isn't truly yours? That hollow ache might be past experiences echoing. Do these statements resonate; Pleasing others at your own cost Feeling like an imposter in your own life, Cycles of unfulfilling, toxic relationships" These aren't weaknesses, but your authentic self trying to break through. If you struggle with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Deep Insecurities, these can all be signs that your present is not aligned with who you really are. That childhood trauma has hidden you away to keep you safe.

Life can be difficult at times. We can feel depressed, anxious, stressed, worried or unable to cope. This can impact on all aspects of our lives; personal and professional. Sometimes all a client needs is someone to really listen to them and to accept what they are saying in a non-judgemental way. Therapy comes in all different shapes and sizes and I believe the mode of therapy should fit the client, we are all individuals after all. I put you, the client at the centre of the work and believe that together we can work collaboratively to help you mange your life more happily and successfully.

As a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist my main focus is helping clients understand and manage their problems within this framework. CBT is an active therapy, present focused, collaborative and structured allowing the clients to become ‘their own therapist’. This type of therapy empowers the client to take responsibility for their own therapeutic journey, acquiring the skills and techniques to maintain changes made in therapy for the long term. I adhere to the standards of conduct, performance and ethics required by my accrediting body the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
