I enjoy working with the contextual, socio-political realms of existence and the more expansive, spiritual and existential areas of living.
If you feel alone, anxious, depressed or confused about life, and want to explore who you are and what you want from life, and relationships, I can offer a supportive presence. Having the space and time to reflect on life is so necessary in managing mental health, but often we don't make time for ourse. There is so much uncertainty right now and often we just need a companion to take a different perspective and help re-situate our worries and fears. I am a queer, Ace-spec lesbian therapist working with the core conditions of empathy, acceptance and congruence to provide an open and expansive space for clients to feel heard and seen.

I work with clients who struggle with a range of issues from relationship challenges to historical sexual abuse. I work with you at your pace in a supportive, non-directive way. I won't ever tell you what to do as I trust that you can come to your own answers with the right support. You may be seeking clarity about a challenging decision to be made or you might want to explore what is blocking you from reaching your potential. It might be that you are lacking in confidence generally and you'd like to get to know who you are and start to believe in yourself. Perhaps you lost your way and you are experiencing an existential crisis.

From time to time everyone experiences stress, sadness, anger, relational conflict and grief which we often suffer alone. Accepting help from others can be difficult but maybe you feel you’ve toughing it out on your own for too long. Whether you are struggling with an identifiable trauma or you’ve reached a point where recurring feelings are becoming unmanageable; a course of psychotherapeutic counselling may help you make sense of what is happening and enable you to gain and maintain some stability. Feelings of fear, anger, rejection and lack of confidence are difficult areas and discussing them with friends too raw and personal.

With a training in Existential Counselling, our work together would be about understanding you, in the way you respond to your unique life-difficulties.
I am currently available for private work, having worked for thirty years in the NHS. I can help to resolve or manage many different mental health problems. However, with an existential training, I would most often view these as life-difficulties and work to understand how your struggles make sense within your unique life.

Life can become overwhelming at times. Sometimes there is a specific event or sometimes there can be general feelings of anxiety or depression, especially following the pandemic and these times of global uncertainty. Talking therapy can help to get to the heart of those fears, and uncover patterns of behaviour or thinking. I can be a witness to your story and guide you towards a more grounded sense of yourself. I aim to walk alongside my clients as we explore their world. Finding a therapist can be overwhelming, but the best way forward is for us to meet and take it from there.

I understand that deciding to start counselling and therapy can feel like a big step, from the start of therapy I encourage my clients to feel empowered through the therapy process. It may be that you've lost a loved one, experiencing family issues, relationship breakdown, struggling with anxiety or work-place stress. It's common to be experiencing a few of these life issues at the same time, which can lead to overwhelm and burnout. As a psychotherapist I aim to offer a tailored approach to each client in therapy sessions.

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist who is interested in helping clients find a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives, coping with anxiety and depression and helping them find more fulfilling relationships. I enjoy working with people who feel like 'outsiders', and also have a wealth of experience in working with addictions and integrating disturbing experiences - including clients who want to integrate experiences with psychedelic substances, or have recovered from psychosis. I am also interested in working with people who have been in relationships which have been abusive, helping them to learn to move forward into new more healthy relationships.

As an integrative counsellor trained in different modalities, including person-centred, existential, psychodynamic and CBT, my approach is always tailored to the person’s individual needs at a given time. I have worked for over two years in private practice with adults from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, presenting with symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self esteem, identity or relationships related issues. While using evidence based and solution focused techniques, I also work with the root cause of these symptoms which are often a consequence of unresolved issues from the early childhood or a lost sense of self.

Psychoynamic, somatic, humanistic, transpersonal and existential (if these words mean anything to you!).
While you may be seeking therapy to help you out of a dark or difficult time- due to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, crisis of meaning, insomnia... therapy can be a powerful gift. We learn a great deal about ourselves and others- ultimately about living life with more ease and enjoyment. We'll get curious about what you learnt growing up: your world-view, your assumptions and even your bodily responses to situations that you face today. We'll see what has worked for you and what causes pain or limits you- to unblock and clear the path forward with compassion, kindness, insight, and even at times, a sense of humour.

Existential Counsellors

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
