I specialise in the following areas although I recognise that each of us is unique and life's challenges and difficulties cannot always be easily categorised: Stress Anxiety/Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Depression, Bereavement, Trauma, Couples counselling, Abuse, Low self-esteem, Bipolar, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Sexuality, General counselling.
Coming to counselling can feel a little daunting; sharing some of our private thoughts and feelings with someone that we do not know can be hard and can feel a little strange. I will help to make you feel comfortable and at ease by offering you a safe, confidential space for you to talk openly, and at a pace that suits you. I am committed to ensuring that you will feel heard, accepted and understood and I will make every effort to appreciate what it is like to be you and to help you understand your feelings and emotions.

I have worked in the NHS for over 20 years and I realise that therapy can be a new and unusual approach for people. I often work with folk who are finding things hard, and need a neutral form of support. I can offer direct support, teaching and practice in cognitive and behavioural techniques, or relaxation and mindfulness ideas to help. The goals that a person wants to work towards might be crystal clear to them, or they might refine these as we work together.

Life is messy and throws us off course. We experience pain, stress and anxiety for many reasons - life events, work issues, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, or feelings of low self-esteem that makes you feel stuck. We may simply feel adrift, struggling to find meaning and our place in the world. Confronting and solving problems can be a painful process which many of us avoid. Avoidance can result in greater pain and the inability to flourish both mentally and spiritually, but by working together to fully understand your issues and goals we can work towards a more fulfilled life.

Is life feeling overwhelming?...Are you feeling stressed, anxious or stuck in a rut? Sometimes life can feel tough, painful or confusing! At times we understand why these feelings have arisen such as through bereavement, family, relationship or work problems, but often we may ask: ‘Why am I feeling this way?’ Or we may just know that things are ‘not right’. These feelings will have a big impact on our relationships, work or ability to enjoy even the simplest things in life which can lead us to feel alone or isolated! Now is the time to stop struggling alone in the hope that things will get better on their own, and make a change!

Whether you are dealing with your own personal demons such as anxiety or depression, suffering from a recent loss, or struggling in a relationship, or whether you're feeling like you want to get to know yourself better and be more at peace with yourself and the world around you, I hope that I can walk beside you and help you to find your way.
Coming for counselling for the first time can be a bit daunting. You don't know what to expect, or how it might be able to help you, but I hope to provide a safe and trusting environment where you will be able to feel supported to bring whatever you need to to the therapy session, and to know that you will be fully listened to and accepted. You may be going through a difficult time in your life and need to find your way through, or you may be looking at having longer term therapy where you look deeper into exploring issues from the past that still affect you, in order that you can live a happier and more fulfilling life.

At times we all find it hard to cope and need a little help to get back on track. I believe that therapy can help anyone to transform their life. I believe in the human potential for change and improvement and the importance of personal growth. Perhaps you're feeling trapped or blocked by the past, confused knowing there must be more to life but feeling stuck in survival. Maybe you feel in the depths of despair with feelings of stress, depression and anxiety or recently grieving from a bereavement or loss. You know changes need to be made and seeking a safe supportive space to find a greater balance and meaning to life.

Bereavement Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
