From a starting point in bereavement counselling I now work with adults and couples who want to explore the impact of many stresses, strains and challenges of life.
Counselling can seem a challenge if you have never sought this kind of help before, but my aim at the outset is to provide the beginnings of a therapeutic relationship which can open the door to an exploration of experience of the past, as well as the present. The aim of therapy can be specific, or obscure, but together we will work towards an achievable goal. I work intuitively, but with firm boundaries which keep us both safe within a very special relationship. Therapy can be long term, or short term, but it is the client who decides what number of sessions is going to be most beneficial.

Sometimes navigating our way through sadness, depression, anxiety and grief can be difficult and also very lonely
I believe that everyone is born OK. We all have value and are worthy of love and relationship. We can change and we all have a right to be in the world and be accepted. I work with Transactional Analysis, and through locating your traumas and your critical inner voice, we can start to change your patterns and beliefs that are unhelpful for you.

I studied later on in life to become a counsellor but alongside my academic credentials, I have a mass of life experience and understanding of Parenting, Relationships, Bereavement, Trauma and PTSD.
I work with all ages face-to-face, online and in groups. I have experience working with clients whose trauma from domestic abuse has impacted them. I use a trauma-informed approach that prioritises creating a safe and supportive environment for my clients. I focus on building trust and empowering individuals by helping them develop coping strategies and resilience. Additionally, I tailor my interventions to meet the unique needs of each client, ensuring they feel heard and validated throughout the healing process. (Whether it is current or historic).

Whether that's general day to day stresses or something more impactful like a death, we're all human and to some degree we've all been there.
I work best with clients that are ready to make a commitment to change, and are ready to develop skills of self-reflection and compassion. Many of my clients have big questions about life and their place in it, as well as questions of who they are and what they want. Some clients don't really know what they want but know that something isn't quite right - that's ok too!

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
