Hi I am Julia, (she/her pronouns) and the fact you are looking for therapy is an incredible first step. I have dedicated my career to helping adults and youth find there way back to themselves and out of really difficult, harrowing and challenging circumstances in their life. My career began supporting youth who were sex trafficked and has since organically evolved into supporting young people and adults living with the effects of trauma, sexual abuse, sexual assault, gender violence, depression anxiety, as well as a full spectrum of mental health concerns. I work with individuals of all genders and sexuality.

Do you have anxiety or conflicting feelings about touch? Do you experience chronic stress? Talking about problems is certainly important, and sometimes words are not enough. Science says we need 8-12 hugs per day for optimal health and many experts have observed that "trauma lives in the body", so you could be triggered by the very thing you need for your healing and well-being. By combining talk and therapeutic touch, my integrated experiential coaching provides a safe space for you to "unpack" and process what's been haunting you, to help you to recover so you can redirect that energy toward living a happier, more satisfying life.

Thank you for being here! I work with adults who may experience emotional and behavioural difficulties. I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, OCD, depressive disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, racial trauma, grief and loss, and other relational problems. I also work with those who have experienced childhood trauma. In my work, I consistently and sincerely acknowledge the importance of the transgenerational impact of acculturation on our beliefs, worldviews, and sense of self. I genuinely believe that we are not broken, so we do not need "fixing;" instead, we work to be the self we want to be!

I bring a trauma informed lens.
As humans we have a deep need to find connection. One of the most challenging things we can face is difficulty being seen and building relationship . Our routes to connection are forged in the relationships we first learn from, early in our lives. Finding our way through what that means for our current reality can be hard to do alone. Together we will explore what came before and what may be next, without losing sight of life now. Sometimes this means sitting in the muck with you; with the trauma, or the depression or the anxiety, and finding a way through; building new pathways of relationship and of being in the world.

Do you ever feel alone, unsafe, scared, or guilty? Even when things seem okay? It is incredibly common for one part of our brain to feel that things are wrong, even if we don’t fully understand why or know what to do about it. This is particularly true for those who have experienced trauma in their lives - whether that a specific traumatic event or the trauma of living in an oppressive, racist, transphobic, homophobic, and ableist system. In my personal and professional life as a queer, brown, and trauma-focused therapist, I have seen that therapy can help us process our past experiences and create a space for us to heal.

Working from an anti-oppressive, anti-black racism, anti-colonialism, culturally sensitive, harm reduction and trauma-informed practice framework I connect folks to resources, provide crisis intervention, psychotherapy or advocacy.
Do you have negative thoughts and core beliefs that you’re not good enough, smart enough or worthy of unconditional love, success and joy? Are you having difficulty waking up in the morning, lack motivation or can’t fall asleep at night because your mind keeps spinning around in circles? Are you experiencing low mood, anxiety, stress or have had some difficult experiences in life that are keeping you stuck? You’ve acquired many strengths and coping skills but there’s still something holding you back from being the person you can and want to be. If that’s what brought you here, I can help.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
