As a gay man, my own journey has included anxiety, depression, addiction and recovery, and I know how much courage it takes to reach out for help.
How you connect with your therapist will be the most important factor in determining how you make progress in therapy. This bond and comfort to share personal information should start to build from the first meeting. With that in mind, I will provide a supportive, non-judgemental environment from which you can explore what is important to you. I have extensive training and experience (12 years counsellor; 9 years social worker, in hospitals, community settings and private practice) providing effective treatment for adult individuals, couples, groups, and supervising other therapists.

Transgender people who are on land currently stolen by “canada” are my clients and peers. If you are trans or 2S and seeking liberation and trauma recovery, you are welcome here. Your body contains the memory of overlapping experiences of violence and not enough safety. You carry stories of abusive relationships, religious violence, homelessness, anti-fatness, dysphoria, or misgendering. You dissociate often and you experience substance use or self-harm. You carry grief. You may have a parts system and you may be neurodivergent. You value an Autistic therapist who encourages unmasking in session.

You’re struggling. You’re angry, you’re sad, and you’re afraid. Some days you’re shouting (even if only inside your own head!), and sometimes there’s just this heavy, heavy silence. Maybe you both dig-in to hold your positions, or maybe one of you runs and the other chases, only to repeat the drama next week or next month. Negativity seems to rule your relationship and you’re both walking on eggshells. And after months and months (or is it years and years?) it’s gotten to the point where you’re wondering if your relationship is beyond repair.

It's okay not to feel okay. If you grew up in a damaging environment, you had to develop ingenious ways of surviving. Enduring your childhood is proof of your strength and resilience. However, you're no longer that child and feel just surviving isn't enough. The problem is that the past won't let you move on—your suffering is not your fault. What helped you in the past may now be hindering your growth. It's time to rewrite your narrative. Join me, and together we will give voice to the parts of you that have been shamed, hidden, and denied. We can't undo the past's grave injustices, but we can take away their power.

I believe that choosing to tell and own our story is the bravest thing we will ever do. My commitment is to create a safe, non-judgemental, and warm place where you can feel seen and heard. In my clinical practice, it is a privilege and pleasure to work with youth (16 yrs+), adult individuals, and couples. I support people as they work through various mental health difficulties, relational issues, sexuality, LGBTQ issues, overwhelming experiences, and identity. I have a special interest and research focus on emotion regulation issues (uncontrolled/overcontrolled emotion), intimacy, shame, and anxiety disorders.

Life can present challenges for all of us. Most people will experience some form of depression or anxiety at some point in their life. The support of an empathetic, non-judgmental counsellor can help us to create a plan to move forward when we feel ‘stuck’. If you are experiencing sadness, stress, or worry, I can provide a safe and non-judgmental environment for you to identify the goals that are most important to you, and support you in reaching those goals.

My treatment approach focuses on two areas to help you with your current difficulties. The first is a focus on identifying what I call your "backstory"- meaning the experiences you have had with people throughout your life. We all learn certain patterns of how to be with other people, and how to regard ourselves, from our "backstory." Sometimes these patterns interfere with our ability to lead mentally healthy and fulfilling lives.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
