Our counsellors use an integration of various trauma-informed, relational, and client-centred approaches that are situated in feminist, anti-oppressive and social justice principles.
*Services by student counsellors and Associates available* People we work with describe feeling disconnected, invalidated, and powerless after experiencing trauma and injustice. Some have felt stuck and overwhelmed in the process of reconnecting with themselves, their communities, and in navigating the dominant culture. We support clients in processing their experiences and deepening their understanding of themselves and their relationships. We affirm clients' needs and desires and value reciprocity and collaboration. Honoring clients' knowledge, we invite clients to co-create safety and exercise their self-determination.

I work from an intersectional feminist, and humanistic perspective - I believe each of us is insightful, resourceful & capable.
You have already taken a courageous step in seeking out support through counselling. You may be sitting with grief, anxiety, hurt or uncertainty. Our identities and emotions can swirl together and become overwhelming, but together we can find ways to let the storm settle and uncover insights, possibilities and ways forward. You may want to improve your close relationships, get some perspective on emotions or issues that are troubling you, or make changes in your life for more connection, joy and fulfillment. You might not yet have a clear vision of the future, but your desire for change is a great place to start.

My practice has been influenced by narrative, trans feminist, social justice-focused and solution-oriented modalities.
I strongly believe that we all have the capacity to heal and to move towards our preferred future. We often can't do this alone. Collaborating with you and attuning my practice to ways that work best for you, I offer a safe space for reflection and insight building. I have worked with a broad range of people over the years and bring with me a commitment to anti-oppressive practice and attention to the contexts that contribute to suffering and to healing. We are living in a time of immense stress and increased isolation and this takes a toll. Reaching out for support is an important act of wellness and I welcome your enquiry.

Marlise identifies as biracial, queer, and fiercely feminist.
You? You're probably awestruck by the beauty of this world but also heart-broken by the cruelty of some of the people in it, and enraged at the injustice. Maybe you have unimaginably intense emotions that you struggle to surf, a quick mind but difficulties connecting with others, creative impulses you can't quite express (or not as fluidly as you used to), or are in a relationship where one of you is a POC and the other isn't and you're just trying to make your crazy love work. You might be a healthcare provider needing to replenish your own well, or a therapist seeking an empowering clinical supervisor.

Feminist Counsellors

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
