In my practice I combine the useful tools offered by CBT with person-focused meaning-making talk therapies such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Existential Psychotherapy.
Welcome. I’m happy you’re here because it means you believe things can get better, and that means you have hope. Hope is a great starting point. All of us woke up in this place called life, and none of us got a manual, let me help you make the most of it. I strive to create a warm, collaborative, and welcoming atmosphere where your bravery and vulnerability are met with a non-judgmental and curious attitude that allows for new insights and self-awareness to surface. I love walking alongside my client’s on their journey to build resilience, tenacity and self-leadership.

Welcome! I'm a firm believer that therapy doesn't have to feel like a trip to the dentist. I specialize in awkward topics, it's important to me that our conversations feel like you're talking to a trusted friend. I help individuals, relationships (mono & ENM) as well as polycules & whole family units. I offer a compassion focused therapy model, often coupled with CBT strategies & dad jokes to help us work through the tough stuff. As an RN Psychotherapist, I not only know traditional psychotherapy techniques but I have knowledge in anatomy/physiology, medication management and I've taken specific education focused in sex therapy.

For over 20 years I have worked in the field of mental health and addictions as a registered psychotherapist. Through many years of practice, I have demonstrated effective treatment of a wide multitude of conditions and mental health disorders. However, I consider myself to be a trauma therapist. To be able to resolve distress in mental health and emotional functioning, I am trained the most effective and evidence-based modalities. I integrate affective neuroscience with traditional psychotherapy to address the neural bases of emotions through a therapeutic approach to modulate cognition and behaviour.

Life has endless challenges for children, youth and young adults these days. Issues that previous generations didn't even need to think about are now part of every day life for younger generations - cyberbullying, worries about school safety, increased rates of mental health struggles, societal conversations about gender and sexuality... On top of that are the issues that have plagued youth for generations - stress, school, dating, friends, and numerous other issues to wade through day by day. Sometimes it's hard to cope with these things on our own though, and that's where I come in.

Are you afraid of breaking up? Do you find that the two of you can’t communicate, or hear each other anymore? Our goal at The Couples Clinic is to help couples find their way back to each other. Topics such as trust, intimacy, extended family, money and infidelity can cause huge struggles in relationships. Even when couples have been together for years, they can still have difficulty navigating these issues. Anger, mistrust, contempt and resentment can pull the two of you apart and make it that much harder to heal and build the future you both deserve.

Are you a young adult struggling with life transitions, unsure about what your next chapter in life looks like? Is substance use or an addiction giving you a hard time lately?Perhaps you're a parent yourself, and you're overwhelmed by supporting your family, struggling to maintain your own mental health. One of my favourite quotes is: “Focus on the step in front of you, not the whole staircase”. I work with clients to make life more manageable. We start by narrowing down your specific goals, then find tools and resources to help you feel accomplished and more like yourself.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
