Grief is unique for every individual. There are many different losses that individuals experience, but the commonality is that grief can be debilitating, lonely and isolating. I accompany clients on their journey of processing multiple forms of grief that can include death loss, pet loss, traumatic loss and/or chronic sorrow. I offer in-person, virtual and telephone sessions. I also am available to provide support to clients in a counselling capacity specific to mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, self esteem, family conflict).

Life can be hard, and at times we can feel overwhelmed. Sometimes, our circumstances change when we separate or divorce, lose a loved one, change careers, have to deal with complex family dynamics, experience health challenges, or encounter other events that make it difficult to manage our feelings and behaviours, or sustain relationships with those closest to us.

I specialize in stress/burn-out, family-of-origin wounds, self-esteem issues, trauma and PTSD.
There’s a lot that holds us back from trying therapy. We may think we need a serious problem to see a therapist. But therapy is for everyone. Because, as humans, we experience sadness, grief, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation. The only qualification to go to therapy is to be human. You may ask, why not talk to a friend? Because friends aren’t properly trained to listen. And the healing begins the moment you feel properly heard. As you attend therapy, patterns emerge, insights appear, wounds open up, and traumas are acknowledged. Going to therapy is an investment in your human potential and betterment. It is a sign of sanity.

Sometimes men are great at pretending everything's fine – even when life is falling apart. Trying to carry the weight of the world all by yourself is a sure path to depression, anger issues, self-medicating, lashing out, and increased stress and physical symptoms. Whether you're trying to figure out what your partner wants (what does she mean by "communicate better" anyway?), or you're needing to talk through personal, work, or family issues, I can help you get to a better place. If you're worried that you're the only one, don't. There is literally nothing you can tell me that I haven't heard or worked with before.

September UPDATE: Welcoming new clients. I often work with people in their 20s-40s navigating family & relational issues, people-pleasing, anxiety and lack of fulfillment despite all they’ve accomplished. A common thread is the pressure to keep it all together, while feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, plagued by self-doubt, or constantly waiting for the rug to be pulled out. If you’ve had to be strong to get through life, it can be especially hard to seek support. I understand that starting (or even returning to) therapy can be a leap outside the comfort zone for many and love supporting this process.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
