I follow an integrative approach utilising somatic techniques to calm the nervous system and release stress and anxiety.
Hello, I offer holistic and inclusive counselling for individuals and couples who are dealing with difficult life transitions, identity and relationships challenges, or struggling with change, loss, grief or unresolved trauma. With professional and lived experience among a range of diverse communities, I understand that adjusting to these events can be complicated, and distressing without the right kind of emotional support. This can lead us to question our choices and undermine our ability to move forward in our lives. Together we can start to explore whatever is happening for you in a culturally safe and trauma-informed way.

With a strong practice underpinned by neuroscience and somatic trauma therapy approaches, I work towards creating greater tolerance toward uncomfortable sensations that arise out of difficult experiences.
As a therapist, I understand the need for warmth and acceptance. This is the foundation of a therapeutic relationship where people can show up with aspects of themselves that are problematic and unhelpful without judgement. I can relate to very human uncomfortable and undesirable behaviors, feelings and beliefs about ourselves. Through consistent support, compassion and curiosity, positive change becomes possible.

I work in a compassion-based, relational, somatic & holistic way towards growth.
With trauma or ongoing stress, survival energy becomes stuck in our nervous system. We might make adjustments, like seeking or avoiding certain types of situations, or clenching certain muscles to dodge tricky feelings or sensations. We believe this keeps us safe from what we fear, but we can also feel trapped in patterns that take a huge toll on our lives, health and relationships. My clients and I work together with sensitivity and compassion to discover ways to gently restore a sense of inner security, peace and passion for life.

Somatic Counsellors

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
