Between childhood and adulthood there is the winding steep passage named Adolescence. It is full of bumps, sharp turns and rough patches when you are asked all the hard questions, ones you don’t have answers for and it can make you anxious, often depressed and even angry and irritable. Take a breath. Feel your feet on the ground and get some balance. You are not broken or crazy. Adolescence is a path that is supposed to challenge us. It is part of the human experience. It is designed to provide us with a time to consider who we are and the type of life we want to have. There are no shortcuts from childhood to adulthood, no softer nor easier path. We all go through this challenging passage. While we felt alone at times on this path, we are all connected through this shared experience and are here to support your growing into your possible. We believe in the symmetry that young people keep old people seeing the possible, and old people keep young people alive to make it happen.

ADHD, Mood & Behavior Center, in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, is a uniquely comprehensive child therapy Center for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral, social and academic difficulties, and for their families. Our professional staff includes board certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, highly specialized child & adolescent behavior therapists and psychotherapists and organizational skills coaches. Though our clinical professionals are experts in diagnosis and treatment of childhood disorders, we know from our vast experience that all children and adolescents do not necessarily fit neatly into particular diagnostic categories. As such, we believe in not simply looking for a “diagnosis”. Rather, we strive to understand each child and adolescent and his or her needs, as well as those of their family, and to identify their specific problem areas, whether they are emotional, behavioral, social or academic. From this understanding, we design an individualized treatment plan that effectively and practically helps each child and adolescent.

Self-Harming Treatment Centers

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
