Therapy does not equal mental illness. The truth is, we all face difficult experiences in life that seem unmanageable at times. Therapy is a safe space and a judgment-free zone. This is a place for you to be real, raw, and your authentic self.

I believe there are many different paths an individual can take to live their best life. For individuals who are struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, occurring separately or at the same time, finding the way to recovery can be challenging. I can help you find your best path by providing therapy sessions that are centered on you and your strengths. I also have experience in helping individuals, both women and men, who are involved in the justice system with issues of mental health and substance use make their way through court, parole and probation programs.

Your mental health is precious. It begs to be tended to and nurtured. But life has a way of getting“lifey.” The very things that make us happy can also be painful and confusing. I believe that within each of us is a library of "knowing." As a trauma informed therapist, my goal is to help you access that authentic part of yourself, providing you with a "library card" of sorts, so that you can make decisions and life choices that align with your values. Our work together will process the lingering and limiting ideas from your past and support your goals and hopes for the future.

Many of us seek counseling to achieve change in our lives. I believe that change occurs most easily in the presence of unconditional acceptance. From this belief, I offer a space to create a genuine and reliable therapeutic relationship. I see this as the foundation for growth and healing. Based on your concerns, worldview and preferences, I offer methods and tools for change and healing. I'm currently a trainer for the Deb Dana and the Polyvagal Theory.

We are all hooked by specific narratives. These narratives are beliefs and opinions we have about ourselves, our lives, and the world. You are here because you are ready to change yours. This may be scary - and very hard at times- but it is possible. I am here to help you clarify your goals, explore alternative perspectives, develop coping strategies, cultivate self-compassion, and facilitate growth and change. I love working with teens and adults experiencing life transitions, whether it's those characterized by career changes or sudden onset of disability symptoms.

You and your partner just aren’t clicking the way you used to. More and more fights are going unresolved, or sometimes you choose not to bring something up because you don’t have the energy to deal with it. The distance between you keeps growing, and you feel even more alone. It seems like your partner doesn’t see you sometimes, let alone know what you actually want or need. Those sweet beginning days of your relationship feel like they happened to two different people. While you can remember what it felt like to be close to each other, it seems impossible to feel like that again.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
