I focus on the Cognitive Behavioral approach, but often will adjust to a more eclectic approach to meet the individual needs of each client. I believe it is crucial to have multiple modalities of therapy when working to achieve positive change. I incorporate a form of Biofeedback, called Neurofeedback. Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback, can improve the way you or your child’s brain functions. It’s a process of identifying target areas of the brain that can benefit from cognitive training. During training I monitor your brain’s activity while you learn new behaviors through a visual and auditory reward system.

Is your teen struggling with anxiety, depression, isolation, friendship issues or conflict? I can help teens learn strategies to cope with the challenges they are experiencing. Teenage years can be difficult to navigate. Many teens just need a trusted adult to talk through the experiences they are having and find ways to cope. I can be that adult for your teen.

Transgender clients will not be subjected to excessive gatekeeping .
After 37 years of clinical experience, I have limited my practice to transgender-identified minors, their parents and transgender adults. Because transgender experience is not a psychopathology, my approach emphasizes assessment, case management, referrals to medical providers, education, and counseling related to transgender experience. If you want help for a minor, please know that I follow the current standards of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health. I work in a thorough, time effective manner. If the minor is seeing a therapist for a co-occurring condition I will collaborate with that provider.

In envisioning my ideal client, I see someone who embodies resilience and courage in the face of adversity. This client may identify as LGBTQI, neurodivergent, or both, and they may be grappling with the aftermath of trauma while also struggling with issues related to sex addiction. Their experiences have likely been complex and multifaceted, and they may be seeking support to navigate the intersections of their identities and the challenges they face. They may be yearning for a safe space where they can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment or discrimination.

"Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it"- This is one of my favorite quotes from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day off because it is so true. Things happen to us throughout our lifetime that make us feel stuck, worthless, guilty, shamed, and like we are never enough. These ideas about ourselves dictate the way we learn, how we do in school and work, and how we love and connect to others. When someone has experienced trauma, these thoughts and feelings can be even more extreme which can cause significant distress. Growth and Empowerment is accepting new clients!

I ONLY see individual clients, no couples. Hi! I'm Jess. Starting therapy can be REALLY hard! Making yourself vulnerable to a perfect stranger can feel uncomfortable - especially if you're dealing with sexuality or relationship concerns. I bring my most authentic self to the session, in the hope that you will, too. My hope is that our work together can improve your ability to manage big feelings, empower you with tools to handle life's challenges, and improve communication in your relationships.

I have extensive experience providing therapeutic services. However, the therapeutic relationship is of the utmost importance. Whether the patient improves hinges on that relationship. My goal is to provide client-centered care. I work in a collaborative manner with the client to identify specific goals and interventions in order to assist the client in making improvements. It is important to match the intervention with the needs of the client and be flexible in making adjustments.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
