You feel overwhelmed, constantly juggling work and home, with no time for yourself. The pressure to perform perfectly at work, as well as other demands, leaves you exhausted. Despite your accomplishments, feelings of inadequacy persist, and you're afraid of letting everyone down. Every day is a struggle to get out of bed, and activities that once brought joy now seem empty. Trusting others is difficult, and sadness and worry are frequent, leaving no chance for self-esteem. The pain from your past and this constant stress are taking a toll, and you realize you need help to move forward. You often feel unworthy of love, sad anxious.

I have tremendous admiration for people who are willing to show up for themselves and take on the work that leads to growth. With such gratitude and sincerity, I offer you a space to connect, be listened to, and learn more about yourself. Clients describe me as down-to-earth, easygoing, and truly genuine. They find they can be themselves with me, build trust, and do the work they'd like to do with self-reflection and skill development to learn how to have corrective emotional experiences with others that improve their relationships and quality of life.

Therapy can be very beneficial for individuals willing to have the courage to be vulnerable and open to change. While most people tend to seek therapy after the fact, when things have gone wrong, I also encourage therapy as a means of maintaining wellness. By being proactive, versus reactive, you may find that you'll experience greater happiness and less stress. If you've done your research then you know there are many options for help, which can make it hard to choose; I standby the importance of a strong therapeutic relationship as key to making this work and encourage you not to give up if you don't feel connected at first.

Hi I am glad you are here. I’m Mike Schwarting, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Oregon. I am currently accepting new patients and I am able to offer individual and couples counseling currently. I believe that therapy is a process of making connections between people. In a chaotic and unsettled world, having a real connection with a knowledgeable, kind, and above all supportive therapist can mean the difference between despair and living the life you deserve.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
