Your mind, body, & spirit are important components of a good life. I work with relationships, abuse, bullying, developing a strong and healthy sense of self, sex & gender, & spirituality. Having had a number of experiences with loss and the survival of the soul, I also do lots of grief and hope work over the passing of beloved animals and people. I find that this helps people with anxiety, especially important in our time. I am fully supportive of various orientations and paths to fulfillment, aware of the roles that class, race, and gender play in our lives. Most of all, I want you to find your true self, not a mask imposed on you.

More and more people are having trouble knowing who they are or where they belong in life. What we were taught growing up or what we learn from society doesn't make sense or apply any longer. Because of this, we have difficulties from depression to questioning our own belief system. It may appear as confusion, anxiety, anger, or anything that disrupts our day-to-day life. When we feel this way it is a hurt or loss that is almost impossible to describe. My type of counseling presents people with an opportunity to understand why and how they think and feel the way they do and to go deeper than they could have possibly imagined.

Every individual is on a unique path filled with twists, turns, and challenges that shape their life. Sometimes, it can be helpful to walk alongside a companion who is dedicated to working with you to achieve your goals, bring you insight, and empower you to move towards genuine fulfillment. I am passionate about honoring your story and how it shapes your thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs. Because no two individuals are the same, your therapeutic work should reflect your individual needs and objectives. Is pornography, cybersex, or sexual addiction impacting your life? Are you feeling alone, sexually rejected, or struggling with low desire in your relationship? Do you want more sexual and emotion intimacy? Are you concerned about your sexual identity or sexual functioning? It is common for people to encounter sexual problems, at any age. What is uncommon is for people to do something about those problems before they irreparably damage their self-esteem and relationships. Left unmanaged, anger, shame, and fear increase. The sooner you come in for help the better chance you have of growing a happy, healthy sexual life.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
