Life is sometimes unpredictable and challenging, and you may find you need some guidance and support. In a collaborative therapeutic environment, we will find solutions to challenges you face, through increased self-awareness and active pursuit of your goals. I integrate my practical experience as a former NASA mechanical engineer with my psychological training as a therapist to see individuals, couples and families. My approach is strength-based, cognitive-behavioral and trauma-informed. I also have extensive experience in addiction, military family issues, and I especially enjoy working with adolescents.

Reaching out for help demonstrates inner strength and willingness to face various life challenges. As an immigrant, accessing resources and services that feel inclusive and culturally sensitive is challenging. My journey in healing as an individual, a mother, and a caring community member has sparked a desire to provide culturally sensitive care to people from all walks of life. Although many clients have experienced marginalization due to their background as an immigrant (BIPOC, MENA, AMEMSA), other clients have realized numerous privileges in their life and felt a sense of inclusion and reconciliation within the larger community.

In my approach, I work in partnership with teenagers and adolescents to help them reach the goals they have set for themselves. Often, this work includes healing from past negative experiences and traumas, support during developmental milestones and issues connected “stage of life” challenges. I have deep confidence in a person’s inherent knowledge of self, resilience and ability to heal and grow in order to be their whole self. I have experience working in the field of social work for over ten years, supporting individuals and communities in a variety of environments including the juvenile justice system, education and advocacy work, residential treatment, community-based work and non-profits. In my work I have developed a client-centered, strengths-based and trauma informed practice modality.

What was once an exciting and vibrant relationship has become stale and unfulfilling. You may feel like you don't know who your partner is anymore. Or who you are, for that matter. You aren't sure you're meeting your partner's needs, and you certainly aren't feeling as though they are meeting yours. You are probably wondering if it's possible for the two of you to ever be happy again. But you aren't ready to give up just yet.

Hope is tangible. “Existe la esperanza.” Life experiences, hurts, burdens, and endless chaos can leave one devastated, isolated, and feeling alone. There is more than emptiness. There is tangible and real-life hope. Ingrid has worked with people for over fifteen years in the role of educator, mentor, and professional counselor. She has spent much time also working with crisis and trauma victims, those working through times of deep grieving and loss, individuals sorting through and understanding their identity, self- worth, and those managing every day with anxiety and depression.

We are all capable of thriving. Sometimes, we may need an intentional space to find out how to make living well a reality. Life can become overwhelming when facing large transitions, depression, anxiety, trauma, loss, spiritual questioning, substance abuse or relationship stressors. These can bring us into a valley of barely being able to function; mind distracted, body exhausted, restless, even isolated. These may bring up old, familiar feelings that show it's time to make room for new healing.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
