During my training in play therapy, I have worked with many children experiencing behavioral problems, divorce, depression, anxiety, grief, abuse, adoption, relational problems with peers and siblings, academic issues, trauma, developmental delays, aggression, abandonment, and disruptive behavior.
As a parent, it can be difficult to know what to do when your child or adolescent is experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties. You may often feel helpless and isolated. I can help. I have had extensive training in the field of play therapy, a developmentally appropriate approach to working with children struggling with a variety of issues. Throughout this process, your child will experience a warm, safe, and accepting environment where these issues can be worked out. I will also work to help you understand your child more and provide you with ways to feel more empowered.

My approach involves empowering clients to build self-compassion and awareness of the roots of their emotional, behavioral, and relational patterns with the ultimate goal of transforming challenges into pathways for growth.
My work with clients focuses on building healthy relationships. I work with couples who are finding themselves stuck in a recurring conflict, struggling to move past a betrayal, or are generally feeling disconnected, premarital couples interested in setting themselves up for success long-term, and individuals who are struggling with maintaining healthy connections, often related to issues with self-esteem, tough inner-critics, or co-dependent tendencies. I believe that in order to thrive in relation to others we must first feel connected to ourselves.

I work with people struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, and unhealthy relational patterns, helping them to identify and change the obstacles and patterns that are getting in their way. Clients often come in feeling like life is overwhelming and they are not managing work, school, friendships and relationships well, despite their best intentions and efforts. Often these patterns are so ingrained that we are not aware of another way of interacting or seeing our core beliefs. Therapy can increase insight and help to resolve and heal the underlying issues, creating the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

I place a strong focus on exploring developmentally important emotional and relational disruptions and rely heavily on attachment theory as a conceptual grounding in my work. I have experience in working with family-of-origin concerns, religious/spiritual concerns, existential questions, relationship concerns, Adult-Children-of-Divorce, LGBTQI concerns, and difficulties with acculturation. My clients are diverse in their racial and ethnic identity, religious affiliation, social class, economic status, sexual orientation, and age. I particularly enjoy working with those who are looking to explore what is beneath their current symptoms in order to understand themselves better and enact lasting change.

As a systemic & relational therapist, Dr.
Couples often wait 7 years prior to seeking professional help. It is unsurprising that many couples who seek couples therapy have experienced chronic conflict, resentment, and disconnection, which paralyzes the growth of their relationship. Dr. Holt’s passion involves helping couples caught in a vicious cycle find true healing, safety, and deep connection again. Her approach centers on addressing the unresolved attachment injuries—such as feelings of rejection or inadequacy—that fuels the negative cycle couples experience. When the attachment injuries remain untreated, this hinders the security and connection between partners.

Using the Ross Trauma Model as a foundation, I rely heavily on attachment theory while incorporating elements of relational and trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy.
Trauma disrupts the whole person. It can leave you feeling detached from yourself and disconnected from those around you. With the extensive variety of symptoms trauma leaves in its wake, it’s also common for survivors to feel misunderstood by others. My goal is to create the space you need to begin feeling safe being you. My passion is for trauma survivors who desire to pursue a life of greater peace, genuineness, and fulfillment. I specialize in working with narcissistic abuse, emotional neglect, CPTSD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and dissociative disorders, including Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Do you feel your life was hijacked by your past or haunted by awful memories? Have you experienced your fear, anxiety, depression or self-doubt like a relentless storm threatening to capsize you? You may feel lost and wonder why you fall into the same pattern. The narratives you tell yourself can have a profound impact on the way you see yourself. Maybe you are tired of the inner critic in your head who has been telling you.

Being human isn't easy. Today's fast-paced and complex world can cause or exacerbate existing stress, anxiety, and depression and put pressure on your relationships. Maintaining perspective to overcome your problems and make solid decisions is challenging. There comes a point where everything comes to a head, and that's when people decide to enter therapy. No one should suffer alone when they can see a professional therapist. Life, while not always easy, is a gift. You can find your way with help. The earlier you seek help, the easier it is to solve your problems.

My hope is to walk alongside folx and support people who may find themselves struggling with anxiety or depression. If you find yourself seeking an internal sense of control through perfectionism, or seeking an external sense of safety through people-pleasing, I would be honored to support you as you learn to increase self-compassion, soften expectations, and identify your needs, limits, and boundaries, to support your sense of well-being. I enjoy helping those who have felt like no one knows them, truly feel seen and safe in their vulnerability and full authentic self.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
