I diagnose and treat clients 13 and up who are experiencing a variety of anxious, depressive, and relational symptoms.
Life isn't what we imagined it would be - especially when we are faced with anxiety, depression, trauma, or conflict with people we care about. Meaning, peace, and belonging can feel unattainable on our dark days. If you are feeling disconnected from yourself, others, or the life you want to live, therapy could be your first step toward healing. It can help spark your imagination for how you want your life to be and initiate steps toward change. Your relationship with yourself and those you care about can experience a new start and you can begin living fully again.

Starting individual counseling or couples counseling can be intimidating. I know it’s uncomfortable to open yourself up to someone and really take a look at the painful stories you carry around. Finding yourself can be a daunting task. What’s more uncomfortable is carrying around pain and other stressors. I am well versed in combating these powerful narratives and I am not afraid of authenticity. I believe that most stories are laced with grief such as divorce, loss or just simply losing yourself. Having experienced layers of grief in my own life, I am ready and willing to join you as you explore by doing the work in therapy.

I am grateful to have been a part of helping so many individuals, couples, and blending families resolve their issues over the past 35 years. While the experience has honed my therapy skills, each new person or relationship is unique and requires exploring solutions that fit their individual personality.

Are you struggling in your marriage? Are you crippled by the stresses and anxieties in this season of life? Is it hard to see light on the other side of the tunnel? Do you feel hopeless? You’re not alone. I remember the fear I experienced while sitting in the emergency room, feeling pain in my body, and hyperventilating, just to be told by doctors that I was physically okay. I felt like hope was lost, but found it again in therapy. I felt alone, but found out I didn't have to be. This is the story of so many of us, and it would be an honor to sit with you in it, to help you feel heard, and to work with you toward healing and health.

Life comes to us in seasons, often with opportunities for healing and growth. Those are times when it might be helpful to work with a professional counselor who understands your challenges and can offer genuine, empathic accompaniment. Together, we can harness hope, chart pathways of renewal, and in time, watch joy gently emerge in your life. In my work with clients I bring a lifetime of experience along with in-depth knowledge of the Catholic faith and training in faith-integrated counseling. I enjoy working with clients from other faith traditions and offer traditional/secular therapy as well.

It feels like you're not going to be able to do this much longer. No, the relationship isn't going to end. It's just that something has got to give. You've literally said everything you can say to help your partner understand what you need. Explaining, negotiating, yelling, managing. All in hopes that something will click. That something will create change. At this point you don't know how it's gotten so painful and lonely. It's starting to feel a little helpless, maybe even hopeless, that you'll ever be able to have the connection that you once had again.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
