I use psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and solution focused modalities.
Do you compare yourself to others and just never quite feel good enough? Are you having a hard time in relationships, finding it hard to know what you are feeling, and how to communicate your wants/ needs to others? Do you feel unworthy, less than, and pressured by others’ expectations? Do you struggle with perfectionism, procrastination, time management, and think you’re always letting yourself and others down? I would love to provide a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to support you with these very painful experiences in life.

My clients generally describe me as an active, challenging, and empathic psychologist. I often find myself compassionately joining with clients in the middle of their difficulties, so that we can collaborate on finding a way out together. It's not uncommon for me to give clients feedback on their choices, while I also respect clients' autonomy. I work best with individuals and couples who are invested in their own growth and willing to experiment with new behaviors and perspectives. I tend to rely on relational-cultural and mindfulness-based approaches, and I am also open to adapting my approach to address clients' unique needs.

I specialize in helping people grapple with existential concerns, often related to grief, loss, and finding a path in life. I work well with people who are disillusioned with the world today and who struggle to reconcile their values with the tasks of daily living, as well as those who have suffered significant losses need help to find their footing once more and to reengage in their altered lives. I do not structure sessions, teach skills, or assign homework.

Whether you're going through a life transition, experiencing something difficult (externally or internally), or want someone you can bounce thoughts, feelings, and ideas off of, I'm here for it. When we take the intentional time to look at how whatever is going on for you is impacting your mental, emotional, physical, and relational health, and how that might be preventing you from reaching your goals, we can not only gain a lot from the therapy process, but also enjoy it. We can work together to talk it through, break down barriers, generate insight, and create positive change in a supportive environment.

Deciding to ask for professional help can be intimidating. In order for psychotherapy to work, it's important that you experience the process as safe, respectful and informed by experience and expertise. Taking a collaborative approach, I work with individuals in an eclectic style; that is, I integrate elements from several theoretical orientations to help people to tackle an array of issues including anxiety, depressed mood and relationship problems to name a few.

Children, adolescents and young adults sometimes experience stress related to school, activities, challenges at home, or periods of transition. These stressors may lead to mood swings, changes in behavior and difficulty expressing emotions and thoughts. My role as a therapist is to help kids and young adults cope with stress and learn strategies to maintain an emotionally balanced life. I provide a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and then work with individuals and families to develop an individualized treatment plan that draws from the client's existing strengths. I utilize evidence-based treatment primarily drawing from CBT.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
