For several years Max devoted his time to Outdoor Recreation and enjoyed bringing others into nature. With time Max realized he wanted to blend the two worlds of nature and mental health, which led him to Springfield College, where he completed his MSW. Taking what he gained in the outdoor industry, he began his journey into social work. Max has a creative and out of the box approach to strength-based therapy working from CBT and DBT modalities. He has experience working with individuals with diverse learning disabilities and ADHD. He enjoys helping his clients reframe their mind to their relationship with their diagnosis.

I am a clinical psychologist in practice in Amherst since 1989. I work with a wide range of people, from college aged through older adults, and with a wide range of problems and issues including: negative or vulnerable self-image, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, losses, and life transitions. I strive to provide a warm, safe, collaborative, open atmosphere in which to help people find relief from suffering and enhanced vital engagement in living. I believe that pathways to growth and healing often involve increasing awareness of underlying self-defeating patterns in the ways people experience and live their lives.

Therapy offers the opportunity to develop ways of responding more authentically and effectively to life’s challenges. I recognize that seeking therapy is in itself a sign of strength and courage, as it can seem easier to try to ignore difficult and repetitive thoughts, emotions, or experiences. I aim to create a warm and supportive space for self-exploration, helping to bring old, unconscious patterns to light and thus begin loosening the hold of self limiting beliefs. In spite of all we cannot control, in learning to relate to our experiences in new ways we can become more grounded and compassionate with ourselves and others.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
