I specialize in working with couples and individuals seeking help with relationship issues such as frequent arguments, infidelity and betrayal recovery, life transitions, parenting, extended family struggles, or couples who are contemplating divorce.
Has betrayal, lying, or infidelity affected your perception of relationships and trust—with both your partner and yourself? Do you feel that the emotional connection you once shared has diminished? Perhaps your sex life is lacking or has become non-existent. Are you finding yourselves in a cycle of constant arguments about the same issues? You may be tired of the gut-wrenching pain of betrayal or are seeking to heal from the heartbreak of a relationship. I can help.

Issues include but not limited to anxiety, depression, low-self-esteem, low motivation, relationship issues, parent/child/couples communication, college and career counseling, life transitions, and more.
I love working with clients who are feeling stuck. It's that moment when things start to seem brighter and less burdensome for my clients that makes being a therapist so rewarding. I work with a lot of people experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or low motivation that keeps them from doing what they want to do or being the person they want to be.

My name is Dr. Joshua Dickter. I specialize in working with children and young adults, and have experience treating individuals managing a variety of symptoms. Some of these symptoms include depression, anxiety, executive functioning challenges, giftedness or (oftentimes) a combination of all of these traits and more. I strongly believe that child distress quickly becomes family distress; therefore, I advocate for a mixed treatment approach involving individual work with the child, family work between parents and the child, and parent coaching sessions or consultations if the parents are comfortable with it.

Does it feel like you're having another one of those days? Again? You know, the kind where you hope it will be different from the day before, but it's not. The kids still don't mind, there's conflict with your spouse/partner, and even though you're constantly busy, it feels as though you haven't accomplished much. Perhaps you feel stressed, angry or disappointed that your life isn't going the way you thought it would. Having kids has been harder than you anticipated and your relationships just aren't very satisfying. Things can change ...

I believe; gaining insight and understanding, feeling more hopeful, knowing someone is there to listen, and being in a safe and non-judgmental environment, are just some of the important keys to therapy. One of the most difficult and courageous things someone can do is to walk into a clinician's office and ask for help. Sometimes people may hesitate to seek help because they feel alone in their pain or that no one will understand them. I work with clients ages two and older, from diverse cultural groups, and foster an atmosphere of understanding across these various age and cultural groups.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
