The best kind of therapy will help you feel more alive to yourself and open to the world. In my practice, I have seen countless times how a strong patient-therapist relationship can be a life-changing resource. I'm deeply invested in understanding why you're in my office today—whether due to dispiriting relationships, self-destructive habits, or a bleak self-image—while simultaneously helping you locate the more capable and resourceful parts of your identity. My style is warm, curious but also candid and direct. I trust that my patients have come to me because they can handle (and need) honesty.

The quest for clarity, for contentment is exhausting and that "Life Is Good" banner taunts us mercilessly. Often, life isn't good - no matter how good we appear to others. Talking about our hopes, dreams, expectations and disappointments can be hard, but it's the best way to make better sense of our desire and the emotionality that necessarily comes with it.

First, I invite you to learn more about me and my work by visiting my website. If you think we may be a match, we can arrange a complimentary 15-minute consultation. I offer this because I believe entering psychotherapy can be one of the most important, life-altering decisions you ever make. Your decision to go into therapy probably was not easy, and the choice of a therapist deserves even greater consideration. You must, in addition to evaluating a therapist’s training and experience, find the right person. Success depends on a good “match” requiring empathy, trust, safety, and respect, sometimes spiced with humor and playfulness.

Do you find it difficult to trust yourself to make healthy decisions? Do you have conflict with friends, family or your employer? Do you want to stop holding yourself back from doing what you REALLY want to do? You may be experiencing "normal" life stress such as finishing school, living together, getting married, a career change, or contemplating parenthood. You may be having "unexpected" stress such as losing a job, deciding to break up, losing a loved one, or being in conflict with yourself or someone else. It's normal to feel anxious, sad or overwhelmed at these times.

Life is worth living when we feel authentic and genuine, and engage in meaningful relationships. Sadness, grief, disappointment, hurt, and loss are all-natural human emotions. Feeling chronically anxious, depressed, inadequate, or unlovable are not. These unrelenting feelings come from an injury (or injuries) that hasn’t healed. Regardless of where your emotional injury comes from, you can learn to regulate your reactions, heal these wounds, take care of yourself, and connect to your sense of meaning and purpose. The more you live in alignment with your values and what is meaningful to you, the better you will feel.

For thousands of years, philosophers have been developing powerful tools for facing the deepest challenges in human life. In our sessions, we use these tools to empower you to think independently, live confidently and choose courageously. We approach your issues of thought and feeling as an architect approaches redesigning a standing structure: We try to understand and save what works well; but together, strive to increase the coherence, order and harmony. We push through to the deepest aspects of your questions, pursue the clearest formulations of your thoughts, and build strong bridges toward objectivity.

As a philosophical counselor, I utilize philosophical tools and theories to help my clients rationally address common issues that arise in life, and in doing so, learn to think more clearly, critically and deeply about them. Most of the issues we face every day are not pathological—they are not the result of mental illness—but rather just a part of life. These include questions about what career to pursue, or how to deal with a relationship issue, or how to find meaning in your life, or cope with the loss of a loved one, or resolve an ethical dilemma or to get clear on what fundamental values one holds or ought to hold.

In my practice, I help individuals move through some of the most difficult moments in their lives the strong emotional tides and automatic responses that are often inherent to any unexpected life change, or past traumatic experiences. Our everyday responses to stress - anxiety, anger, irritability, bouts of depression, or fatigue and the effectiveness of our ability to cope with current stressors are often related to painful past experiences, some recent and some from long ago. My practice is dedicated to offering individuals the supports necessary to navigate through pain from our past to a place of resiliency.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
