Through years of providing individual, couples, and group therapy in addiction and mental illness treatment, I developed keen understanding of contributing issues: relationships, life transition, grief and loss, trauma.
I work with clients to identify their most important areas for personal growth, develop plans for change, and enact that plan; by matching the therapy to the client, ensuring that every client develops tools and strategies to tackle their own personal challenges and life transitions.. My approach includes influences from yoga, drama, music, and art.

I have 25 years of experience treating adolescents, adults and couples.
I imagine that you are seeking therapy because you feel depressed or anxious and want to explore what troubles you and why. Maybe you're unhappy at work, or aren't getting along with a partner, or are grieving the loss of someone dear to you. Therapy is a safe place where you can be yourself and open up about the difficulties you're having. Together we will identify how you get in your own way and work to remove the blocks that weigh you down and keep you from achieving your goals and more contentedly living your life.

As a therapist and yoga teacher, part of my approach involves integrating mindfulness, the mind-body connection, and movement into talk therapy. By bringing awareness to how your body experiences emotions, we can address stress, overwhelm, and anxiety you’re carrying and create space for more joy, compassion, and ease. We’ll also use other evidence-based strategies to recognize unhelpful patterns, explore the relationship between your past and present experiences, and identify goals to support the future self you want to create.

I have a special interest in couples therapy and have helped many couples negotiate the terms and expectations for their relationship.
I believe that we all engage in repetitive behaviors in our approaches to relationships, our work, and ourselves. These ways of being and coping made sense at earlier points in our lives, but hold us back from feeling authentic in the present. The process of therapy can create long-term shifts through building understanding of ourselves and by allowing for greater freedom in self-expression. I view therapy as transformative because of the safe space it provides for a new relational experience, one in which patients can experiment with new thoughts, feelings, and words in the presence of a receptive professional.

I have experience working with adults, families, and couples on relationship issues, communication styles, depression, anxiety, and other life challenges.
Therapy is a safe place to work on life challenges. My style is an eclectic approach using psychodynamic and behavioral modification methods, guided by my intuition, compassion and belief in you. I help clients discover their strengths while empowering them to discover the "why" of negative patterns, and the "how" of making changes. I am candid, without judgment and I encourage without pressure.

Engaging in creative work, connecting with your partner, and deepening intimacy requires being in touch with your emotions. So it can be particularly challenging when you’re too anxious to get into character, too depressed to get out of bed, or too anxious for date night. All of a sudden, you find yourself feeling isolated, misunderstood, or like a painter working with frayed brushes. You deserve a space in therapy to work through life’s challenges. Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in the mind that it becomes difficult—or even painful—to slow down and notice what you're feeling both emotionally and in your body.

SLOTS open NOW! Many of my clients come seeking clarity on why they feel the way they feel, what's getting in the way of their goals, and how they have established patterns of relating that do not serve them. Others struggle with long-term mental health issues, trauma or crisis. I work with clients to solve problems and diminish symptoms by exploring the roots of their troubles. Through my training and careful listening, I empower my clients to create lasting change in their lives through the insight we gain together while providing a safe space to connect and experience relief.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
