My focus as a therapist is helping you understand and embrace your own identity and your own values. There is powerful strength in being yourself, and we can discover that strength together. My expertise is particularly in working with body image and eating disorders, with people who have or wish to be evaluated for autism and/or ADHD, with people experiencing self-injury or suicidal ideation, and with people who have "treatment-resistant" or severe anxiety and depression. I partner with patients who want to understand themselves on a deep level, while simultaneously offering concrete skills and tools to alleviate current symptoms.

Do your emotions overwhelm you? Do they get away from you and lead to behaviors that affect your relationships, career and/or sense of self? Has it been more difficult than usual to manage your worry thoughts or your mood? It can be difficult to build the life you want when strong emotions get in the way. While it might not seem possible now, you CAN rein them in and I’d like to show you how.

When excessive worries and stress arise, we often overthink each and every decision. It can begin to feel as if we are stuck in our lives. Relationships, work, sleep, and enjoyment are all negatively affected. With warmth and openness, I'll guide you as you gain insight into your interpersonal relationships, behaviors, and choices. I'll help you learn to trust your instincts and reduce self doubt so that decision making becomes easier. I encourage you to bring whatever struggles you may encounter, both big and small, past and present, to our sessions.

My focus in working with patients is for them to feel deeply understood by me and to feel safe in exploring their issues, whatever they might be. This understanding is best accomplished, in my mind, through the use of empathy. What is it like for you to be you? For me, the relationship between patient and therapist must point in the direction of healing oneself and through oneself, others. I fundamentally believe, like others before me, that the patient is the one who guides the process. Similarly, it is the patient who is my best teacher.

Psychotherapy is to the mind what the immune system is to the body. It protects and strengthens. Our mental health is a measure of how strong the relationships in our lives are. Our sense of wellbeing is linked to our ability to create and sustain healthy connections with other people. When our needs for safety, trust or atunement haven't been met; where there was or is neglect, abuse, or other traumas, our nervous system's capacity to regulate feelings gets compromised. Are you feeling isolated in your relationships? While romance may begin in an instant, long-term relationships are not easy to maintain alone. No matter where you are in your relationship, seeking guidance, opening the lines of communication, and establishing safety in emotional expression are the cornerstones of any lasting and fulfilling relationship. I aim to empower my clients to realize the strengths they already possess. I work with them, both individually and as couples and families, to utilize those unique strengths to develop a positive narrative for their lives and relationships.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
