Searching for a therapist can feel discouraging at times and raise endless questions. What exactly am I looking for? Will I feel understood? Would I even benefit from therapy? I believe that once you find the right fit, the transformative nature of the therapy relationship can help you find your voice and a true sense of direction. I approach therapy from a place of humor, curiosity and an honest desire to help you uncover those places where you feel most stuck in order to build the life that you want.

People struggling with codependency typically have a history of trauma, abuse, neglect or other painful experiences. Even if no longer in those situations, you may experience deep loneliness from hiding yourself, resentment, physical aches and pains, substance use or perfectionism. You may have needed people-pleasing at a time in your life, but find it is no longer working now. I work with individual adults and couples; I offer in person sessions in Park Slope as well as virtual sessions in New York State. I specialize in treating people-pleasing and codependent patterns in relationships.

I have been practicing for over 28 years as a couples, family and individual therapist, for children, adolescents and adults. My areas of specialty include relationships, how to manage conflicts, parenting teens, how to maintain intimacy and co-parent effectively, including the difficulties of dating, infidelity, divorce, sex and finances. Individual problems include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, history of trauma, infertility, and other personal issues. Early career work supervising therapists in a court based crisis unit led me to many decades of work with NYC teens and their families.

I work with clients to create the conditions for greater self-acceptance, ease, and self-agency. I often work with creative or sensitive people, and with those recovering from complex trauma, addiction, and family-of-origin wounds that may cause depression, stuckness, or disconnection. I believe in the liberating process of creating space for grief, sorrow, anger, humor and joy as a means to support growth, healing, and change. I work with clients in a highly experiential way, honoring the wisdom of the body and language of the soul. I believe that building and creating one's life is more powerful than attempting to "fix" oneself.

How do we deeply explore the difficult parts of ourselves with self-compassion and acceptance, while at the same time stretching to grow, evolve, and heal? Can we dare to live our lives in a way that realizes our full potential and what holds us back from doing so? It can be difficult to explore this all alone. In a gentle, nonjudgmental, and collaborative way, I provide support for my clients on their journey to become more fully themselves.

I work with individual adults, parents and children, and families. Clients see me to alleviate anxiety and manage stress, support their child's behavior and growth, and address issues in the parent/child relationship. Parenting a young child can bring great delight and satisfaction, and also present isolation, anxiety, bewilderment and depression. With additional training in infant and early childhood mental health, I help parents & children increase joy in their connection, reduce challenging behavior, get more sleep, navigate power struggles, & find healing after a traumatic experience.

Do you feel stuck? Weighed down by shame or grief? Are your relationships frustrating or unfulfilling? Do you feel like you learned unhealthy ways of communicating from your family? Does culture play a big part in these concerns as both a source of strength and an added strain? I welcome the client who wants a deeper connection to themselves and the people they love. Someone who is looking for the space to reconnect to their emotional life and the guidance to move toward a more authentic way of communicating with others.

My path to becoming a psychologist emerged through my own therapy journey where I learned what Maya Angelou captures so gracefully: “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” These words resonate with my story and those of many who seek therapy. Working through our narratives of the past so we are free to reshape the way we perceive ourselves, other people, and the world is transformative. In therapy, it becomes possible to liberate yourself by seeing the present clearly moment clearly, unshrouded by the fog of the past, thereby allowing for a more fulfilling future.

I became a therapist after years of teaching and tutoring middle school, high school and college students, and have experience working with students with ADHD and executive function challenges. I have worked with students who were at risk of dropping out of high school and with children and adolescents who experienced various forms of trauma. I bring warmth, empathy and humor to my practice, and use a strengths-based, relational and trauma-informed approach. I incorporate mindfulness and use nature for inspiration in healing, and bring a commitment to social justice and an anti-oppressive lens to my practice.

As a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) and a Registered Drama Therapist (RDT), I believe that creativity is essential to the journey towards self-discovery and transformation. Through the lens of story, role, and metaphor I like to explore patterns that may no longer be serving you, while highlighting the parts of self that are adaptive. I work with people who have been impacted by trauma, depression, anxiety, fertility/loss, relationship issues, learning challenges and other life obstacles. I work from an anti- oppressive and trauma informed lens.

No one seeks therapy because they feel their life is going well. However, seeking therapy is a sign that things are actually going right! Deeply, intimately, and passionately knowing yourself is the key to happiness and I want to help you achieve that. Knowledge is power and with that power you can make decisions to change. You can achieve acess to parts of yourself that can make you feel alive and in love with life. I am excited to help you do that.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
