I only have availability Tuesdays at 12 or 1pm beginning in June. -> Hi! I'm Jess. Starting therapy can be REALLY hard! Making yourself vulnerable to a perfect stranger can feel uncomfortable - especially if you're dealing with sexuality or relationship concerns. I bring my most authentic self to the session, in the hope that you will, too. My hope is that our work together can improve your ability to manage big feelings, empower you with tools to handle life's challenges, and improve communication in your relationships.

My ideal client is a young adult aged between 18-30. Their issues and needs may look like learning how to control anxiety symptoms, increasing emotion regulation and distress tolerance while improving mindfulness. This client is motivated and willing to work with the therapist to learn how to change their life to meet their goals.

My ideal client is one who is willing to explore uncomfortable areas in their life and understand that vulnerability is part of the process. One of the most important parts of therapy to me is highlighting accountability and what roles we play in our own lives. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with relationship issues, self-esteem, irrational thinking, and life adjustments. A client who can pinpoint what they would like to improve in their life and request a little bit of guidance along the way is an ideal client. Their goal is not to be perfect but to improve their day-to-day life a little more each day.

Does self consciousness and fear get in the way of you living the life you want? So many of us have deep desires for meaningful, impactful lives but get hamstrung by insecurity. I teach self soothing and then familiarize clients with their unique strengths, helping them find confidence and calm. My strong interest in body image and building resilience means that my clients don't have to use food and drink to numb their feelings. I've studied holistic nutrition and am an unapologetic feminist. My down-to-earth communication is based in the belief that an honest and intentional therapeutic relationship can be deeply healing.

I take an individual approach to each client, tailoring my methods to a persons needs and issues. I use cognitive behavioral techniques to help my clients manage their issues (i.e. anxieties, relationships etc.) by changing counterproductive thought patterns. There are times in all of our lives when we could use some extra support. Feeling hurt, misunderstood, angry, and confused are things each of us may feel.I am available to meet with children, adolescents, and adults on an individual basis as well as family/couples counseling. Feel free to contact me with any questions, or to see if I am the right fit

My favorite author, Cleo Wade, once wrote, “There is no mountain that cannot be climbed and there are more pathways to the top than we could ever imagine.” At times, it can feel like the mountain(s) in front of us are insurmountable. These mountains could include grief reactions, trauma, relationship problems, newfound or old insecurities that won’t go away, job or financial insecurities, family difficulties, and many more. I believe that therapy exists to help you find alternative pathways to the top of the mountain you are facing.

Psychotherapy is a unique experience, in that it is encouraged that you share all of your thoughts & feelings, to include those that you might withhold in other contexts. Ideally, you will have an experience of feeling affirmed/acknowledged, thoroughly listened to, and seen as a complex person. That said, it can take a long time to feel free enough to share yourself in this way, and it is important that we move at your pace, plus respect that there are reasons why certain pieces of you are protected away. Your symptoms/difficultie are there for various reasons. You lead the way; I will support you in your process.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
