I use Evidence Based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person Centered, Solution Focused therapies with Motivational Interviewing.
Hi, my name is Alecia, I am Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have lived in Lee County for over 30 years. I work with individuals, couples and families. Life can be a lonely place when you no longer feel yourself or are feeling overwhelmed. Anxiety, depression and traumas can feel like a cinder block on our shoulders. You may wonder how things will change? Change begins with vulnerability. To be vulnerable is to let go of the notion you have to struggle alone.

Why do we or our loved ones continue in cycles that harm? This question often echoes in the minds of family members or those battling addiction. The sleepless nights and torment are harrowing. Yet, there is hope and help. Having experienced alcoholism firsthand as a daughter, sister, and individual, I understand the journey intimately. I’ve transcended maladaptive coping mechanisms and made it my life’s mission to aid others in their struggle against this illness. Whether you’re a family member or directly grappling with addiction, I am here to support you.

Gaining the skills and self-compassion to guide your way through challenging emotions and experiences can be life changing. I believe it is so important to speak our feelings honestly, especially the ones that hold shame for us, with those we feel safe to do so around. There's no greater antidote for shame than hearing someone else say, "me too" or "I see you." I will absolutely be that person for you. Our therapeutic relationship will create a nurturing pathway to access your vulnerability in a way that feels safe and healing. My approach is warm and skillful, utilizing humanistic, cognitive behavioral, and mindfulness techniques.

Ongoing stress, overwhelming feelings and anxious thoughts can leave us mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. When these feelings go unresolved they take control of our lives and prohibit us from living to the fullest. Life can leave us with wounds from trauma, relationship patterns and unhealthy cycles we naturally fall back into. These patterns often lead to us feeling "stuck" and unsure of how to move forward.

For many, the journey towards parenthood can be a long and difficult road. This journey may be filled with negative pregnancy tests, the heartbreak of loss, the anxiety of fertility treatments, the pressure of picking the right donor, the trauma of a NICU stay, or the heaviness of postpartum depression and anxiety. The complexities of navigating parent life continue as your child grows and your family transitions not only with your child's age but sometimes through family transitions such a divorce, step-parenting, or adjusting to stay at home parenting.

Experiencing ongoing feelings of overwhelm, anxiety and stress? Does self doubt, pleasing others and avoiding conflict interfere with your ability to move forward? Chronic stress, a history of abuse or traumatic events can lead to anxiety, self-criticism, relationship problems, or a feeling of "stuck-ness" that you just can't seem to get in front of.

The crazy thing about life is that there are no instructions. Sometimes our toughest lessons have to be learned by going through the process of change. How many times have you wished you could hit the "reset" button when things go wrong? While I can't promise a magic button, I can promise that your feelings and the process you are going through right now are both totally valid. Sometimes we hold back on speaking our own truth because we haven't admitted to ourselves yet what we may already be feeling. I'm here to offer you the safe space needed in order to help you uncover your personal truth.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
