Are you a young professional who feels stuck in life, held back by anxiety, or lack of motivation because you don’t know where you want to go? Are you an athlete and know you could perform better if you were just more calm and in control of your emotions? Or maybe you have a child who is struggling with emotional regulation, flexibility and anxiety. I work with each of these populations to help the young professional thrive, the athlete maintain mental and emotional stability while performing and the child who’s anxious to calm fear and hyper vigilance.

As a person who knows firsthand what it’s like to begin the counseling process, I understand how critical it is to connect with your counselor and the feelings that come with taking these first steps. As such, guiding my clients toward personal growth is a passion of mine. I firmly believe that each individual has the potential to overcome challenges and thrive. Therapy is not a "one-size-fits-all" process, and my approach is grounded in empathy and respect. It’s imperative that you feel heard, as well as empowered while pursuing your journey toward the life you imagine for yourself!

Are you an adult carrying the weight of past experiences that still impact your present? Whether it’s trauma, anxiety, or overwhelming stress, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy can help you process painful memories and break free from patterns that no longer serve you. I specialize in working with adults who are ready to heal from trauma, feel more in control of their emotions, and reconnect with their lives in a meaningful way. EMDR is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories—without needing to talk in detail about them.

Difficult past? Chaotic present? Uncertain future? These are the questions that can plague us with anxiety and slowly take over our lives. You want relief from the constant worrying, or relief for your child who cannot stop worrying. You want freedom from the childhood experiences that, despite your best efforts, continue to impact your current life. You want to understand how to survive as an introvert in a world catering to extroverts. You want to find a way to communicate with a distant partner. You are in the right place and on your way to a better life.

We find ourselves traveling down the same roads all the time, same route to work, school, and even family and friends' houses. Sometimes we become so used to the way we are living that change is often difficult to achieve. I believe this is because we are stuck in ways of thinking because we have done it for as long as we can remember. "That's just the way I am." If you are looking to find a new way of doing things because you are unsatisfied or stuck in a rut, I would love to help you navigate change.

I take a collaborative approach to care, working together with clients to find hope and healing. I favor a strengths-based perspective in counseling, recognizing that individuals often have existing strengths and supports in place that can be partnered with learned coping skills. I also draw on a cognitive behavioral theory framework, integrating body-conscious and mindfulness techniques to help clients better connect with themselves, challenge unhelpful thinking, and experience healing in the here and now.

You don’t have to keep holding it all together. If you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck in your thoughts, or weighed down by things you can’t explain — you're not alone. Life gets heavy sometimes, and it’s okay to need support. Whatever you're carrying, you deserve a space where you can slow down, feel safe, and start to heal. Together, we’ll slow things down and figure out what’s really going on, not just the symptoms, but the stories underneath them.

From the moment you walk into a counseling office or hit the "Enter" button to join a video session, your subconscious starts assessing your environment. Is it safe? Welcoming? Professional? Then comes the direct interaction with your counselor. Does it feel like they understand you? Do your personalities click? After you leave the session, your conscious thought kicks in to evaluate your experience. Many factors go into how you feel about counseling, and by proxy, the kind of experience you'll have.

I believe that every person has the capacity to experience new levels of wholeness. Therapy can be a catalyst for growth; a place to be fully seen, known, and equipped. I work with women in transition, whether you're navigating college, career, marriage, or motherhood, as well as the "less shiny" changes; most especially the painful seasons. We'll work together to create sustainable rhythms for mind-body-spirit wellness. I offer a somatics-based EMDR integration to strengthen nervous system regulation or work through unprocessed trauma. Sessions offer a contained space to work through the stuff you find yourself avoiding.

"Why is my life so out of control?" This is a very common question patients ask me when first entering treatment. The real question is what are the underlying root causes that is generating these challenging behaviors. Through a thorough assessment I will help you identify such areas as depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, life stressors, etc. that may actually be driving the dysfunctional behaviors of alcoholism and/or drug abuse, marital distress, poor anger management and overall stressful interpersonal conflicts. Let me help you develop a plan of action to get your life back today.

How can I find a therapist in Kentwood?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
