Hello, I’m James, and thank you for being here. Whether you are new to therapy or have been sitting on the couch for years, welcome! First off, there is no perfect way to do therapy and there is no perfect way to client. So, I hope for you less pressure and worry in exploring this curious thing called therapy. I strive to make my practice safe, comfortable, individualized and resourceful. Another core tenant of my practice that I find equally important: your leadership. Now accepting new clients - Through over twenty-five years of experience in the human service field I understand our struggles in life can be difficult and lonely. I have found that connection, laughter and a warm smile can be the key to healing. I strive to provide compassionate care to those learning to heal, and I have experience treating: men's issues, parenting issues, anxiety, depression, trauma stemming from childhood and interpersonal relationships, grief and loss, marriage/relationship difficulties, eating disorders/disordered eating, and weight loss related challenges.

I focus on the connectedness among developmental, social, relational, and cultural factors. I have experience working with a diverse population of clients, including children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. I work with clients dealing with many different issues. I have worked with clients from a myriad of racial and ethnic backgrounds but have focused experience working with Black and Native American clients striving to work through race-related stress and racial identity concerns. I work with sexual identity and gender identity concerns (e.g., trans, questioning, gender non-conforming).

I work well with people who are experiencing emotional or psychological distress and are motivated to overcome their challenges. You may be struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or trauma. You want a therapist who can understand your feelings and provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for you to express your thoughts and emotions. I am here to provide the type of care that you are seeking.

Most people will experience emotional and psychological distress at some point in their lives. And, most people will go through it without seeking help, thereby prolonging their suffering unnecessarily. Some people choose to do this because they are unsure about what therapy can provide. Therapy helps by trying to make sense out of our experiences, by trying to figure out why we feel and do the things that we feel and do. By making sense of our experiences, it helps us to understand ourselves, to change and to live a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

Most of my most current clients are adolescents and young adults wanting to uderstand why they are not satisfied with their lives. Most issues involve their relationships: Family, friend, sexual, work, or school. With the increased stress of the pandemic and economic insecurities today, everything is magnified and more difficult. What most clients want is to feel what they believe was normal again. Every story is unique and individual. No treatment plan is based on a cookie cutter approach. Your treatment is based on your needs and desires. You are a partner in your treatment. I am a licensed psychologist and the clinical director of Sollars and Associates Integrative Counseling and Psychological Services. I have been providing counseling and psychotherapy for over 30 years in the Metro Detroit area and our group practice spans across the state of Michigan. With support, encouragement and expert insight many people begin to feel better after their first session.

I am an especially good fit for those who struggle with questions of meaning; anyone overburdened with feelings of guilt and shame; those who feel like they are outsiders or misfits; and creative and intellectual types. I counsel individuals experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, mood disorders such as Bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and other mental health conditions.
