I am a licensed mental health counselor and the owner of Kristen Sullivan and Associates Inc. I have a great deal of experience working with substance abuse issues. Clients and I work together to get to the root of the problem, and uncover the reasons behind their substance abuse. Once these past issues are conquered, they can start on the fresh path to living a sober and fulfilling life.

I’ve worked in this capacity for more than a decade with roles as an individual counselor, intensive care coordinator, rehabilitation specialist, in home behavioral therapist, and sub abuse counselor. I’m certified in mindfulness which I often utilize. Other techniques I use: solution focused, behavioral, and collaborative therapies. These techniques are used to treat depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, substance use disorder, etc.

Working with clients from ethnic minority groups is my passion; especially Brazilians, Latinos and Native Americans. Having experienced being an immigrant myself while living in Brazil, I am very aware of the unique difficulties facing newly arrived immigrants. Individuals needing assistance with school difficulties, parenting concerns, family conflict, marital discord, or functionally impairing mental health symptoms are my ideal client.

I've been in private practice for 34 years. I've had extensive training in both theoretical and didactic psychotherapy. An important part of my training was my own work and research in understanding myself and my marriage and other important relationships. This is why I think I am so confident at being both a couples therapist and an individual therapist. I believe this is primarily an educational process or a re-educational process.

Counseling Resources started in Rhode Island as a small practice serving the northern RI community. It grew exponentially over the years, and the level of skill and knowledge the clinicians provided was unmatched in the area. The practice was dedicated to helping all walks of people. Referrals came from doctors' offices, word of mouth, insurance companies, the state, and other resources. It was an enjoyment and an honor to serve the hundreds of patients the practice served. My Ideal client: 36 yo male, divorced, with two children. The patient was incarcerated 16 years, due to drug addiction/trafficking. He spent his early childhood living with his mother and father, who sexually abused him. They were also addicted to drugs due to their childhood experiences of being abused. The patient's parents also prostituted him in exchange for drugs for others. The patient turned to drugs to escape the pain, embarrassment, and overall trauma from his childhood. He now wants sobriety and to overcome his trauma, which includes flashbacks and negative self-image, self-hatred, and hatred of his parents.

I graduated from Cambridge College in 2014 with an M.Ed in Counseling Psychology and Addiction Counseling. I have worked in an array of settings, including residential, inpatient and outpatient with individuals, families and groups. I am a Licensed Social Worker with a passion for decreasing the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting the health and well being of my clients. For my undergraduate degree, I moved from Central Jersey (Yes! It exists!) to South Jersey to attend Stockton University. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work with a Minor in Behavioral Neuroscience from Stockton, and then moved on to attend graduate school in Philadelphia. I received my Master of Social Work Degree with a clinical concentration from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice in May of 2020.
