Negative or traumatic experiences from the past get encoded in our bodies. When these neurons get triggered, our positive present mindset gets blasted by echoes of past fear. Old, stuck anxiety shape-shifts into not-great coping habits. Old, stuck depression whispers that it's dumb to future plan, unsafe to dream. Since this embodied stress speaks "sensation" , the language of the body, verbal therapy alone can't help our bodies know that the past is really, truly in the past. So we project our fear into the future. Pass it down to our kids. Spread it out into the world. I work with people who would like to be done with all that.

To our Dear Future Client, If you're reading this, chances are you may have noticed that something does not feel right in your relationship. Perhaps you have known this for quite some time or maybe you have only now come to realize an important truth - that this is not how you want to feel, not where you want to be, & it's time for change. Change can be really scary and overwhelming, maybe even foreign. Of course, evolution doesn't happen overnight, so naturally you may ask how & when does it happen? Good questions!

It’s never too early or late to make a change in your life. Anyone can get stuck at any age and different points, because life can be filled with all types of stressors: relationships, school, work, loss, and maybe unknown. If you match with the right therapist, change can happen, because it happened to me. I changed careers in my 40’s and I've never been happier since working with clients of all ages- young kids- adolescents -late adulthood. People aren’t cookie cutter and therapy shouldn’t be either.

Therapy, and life, are non-linear. In our work together you are welcomed to feel - to feel deeply, express, process, and with time move through your emotions. If you are living in a state of overwhelm, are struggling through transitions, or are feeling disconnected from your body, know that you are not alone. In our work together, we can explore where you are, what is impacting your mood, and how to create meaningful and lasting change. Whether you are dealing with recent challenges or want to process and find relief from older patterns, I will hold a supportive and compassionate space for growth, understanding and self-development.

Trauma and the destabilizing events of our lives can impact our ability to grow no matter when or how they happen. We can find ourselves in harmful or unmanageable cycles that persist. By creating a safe space to creatively experiment in therapy you can provide yourself with the means and intention to grow. As a Clinician I have worked with clients experiencing addiction, the impact of trauma, and family dysfunction. Perhaps these challenges have led to unhealthy behaviors that don't fit who you are and what you need anymore. Or that you have reached many of your goals, but realize the cost has been an internal battle that persists.

Another slammed door, shriek and the sound of broken glass that sends your heart rate spiraling and your thoughts racing. "Oh no, not again!" You've tried everything that you can think of to change your child's behavior. You spoke to professionals and educators, tried punishing and rewarding but it's no use. Nothing seems to make a difference. The frustration that you feel is eclipsed only by the guilt that this is somehow the fault of your parenting - it's not. You want to give your child their best chance at success, but you don't know how. It feels like you are letting your child down.

Sometimes life has us so overwhelmed that words evade us. We can be drenched in emotion, or we can be numb to it all. Our struggles manifest uniquely according to the biological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual elements in our lives. We might feel lost and alone, but it is important to remember that we are not. I wish to provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for you, in which we can explore together. We may attempt to connect words with feelings, or we may let silence hold its power; the conscious and the unconscious are both invited. Through our relationship we may discover new pathways of resilience.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
