I've had the opportunity to work with individuals, families and couples in various settings to improve communication and conflict resolution as well as work through many challenging emotional struggles, and relational problems.
One of my greatest joys, is helping individuals, couples and families learn to manage the various, yet often unavoidable, stresses of life. Our days are packed with work, school, family, and relationships. We come home depleted and then it starts all over again the next day. Feelings of anxiety, panic, depression, anger, and/or lack of motivation, are inevitable. So it grieves my heart when clients ask what's wrong with them. So while we may need to "power through" certain situations, I help my clients develop strategies that are tailor made to their circumstances and personality, to successfully complete the marathon of life.

Even in the best of times relationships are challenging. Counseling can go down many paths to help make challenges more manageable. Here are four main paths we can explore: Starting fresh with new skills and approaches to being a couple. Making amends and forgiveness. Exploring your family culture and what you bring into your relationship. Restructuring, uncoupling, separation, or compassionate divorce. Let's discuss the main options and together agree upon the focus of our work moving forward. I take an integrated approach to working with couples which has been informed by many master clinicians.

I enjoy working with people open to reflecting on their issues and sincere about wanting to grow and change. We all at times find that we want to be more objective in our relationships and in our reactions to the challenges that confront us. I find satisfaction in helping people foster their capacity to overcome frustration, sadness, anxiety and fear. Often painful experiences in life cause us to respond in subjective ways, which only adds to and reinforces our frustration and alienation. I hope to build a trusting relationship with you that will enable you to feel more free spirited.

I emphasize a relational therapeutic approach informed by Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically-Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), and Behavioral Activation.
The expectations of our family, friends, and community can influence how we navigate the world and whether or not we embrace our authentic selves. I believe in the use of humor to connect in the therapeutic relationship while creating a safe and validating space in order to explore vulnerable topics; to move from surviving to thriving and towards a values-driven life; to move towards empowerment; to find your own voice; to find compassion for both yourself and others. And I would be honored to join you in your journey to engage in this therapeutic process together.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
