If you enjoy animals, nature or people, you already have a powerful foundation to create stability and momentum in your life. What you might struggle with isn't a label. It's an experience. Start where you're at, and explore it with somebody who will start there with you. Need change or just greater balance? Want more out of life? On a journey, but somehow lost? Feeling stuck, apathetic, burnt out or anxious is not uncommon! However, the tools and how to use them are not always obvious. Animal assisted, experiential, mindfulness and nature-based therapies are most clients' favorite tools.

Now Accepting New Clients In Person and Online — I am here to offer support and guidance to clients during difficult times, transitions, or simply in their everyday lives. There are moments when understanding and processing our feelings, thoughts, and circumstances become crucial, and I offer a collaborative, non-judgmental space for that purpose. I tend to work with men dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship conflicts, work stress, social isolation, life transitions, trauma as well as issues related to sexuality and identity. I also have experience working with people who are under excessive external pressure to succeed.

I have twenty plus years’ experience as a therapist using mindfulness, CBT, and a humanistic approach.
I believe in transformation - yours (and mine), and that the draw towards the good is irresistible. Whatever challenges you face, there’s a way forward. How you see yourself - and those around you - can make all the difference. I want to know your story, how you tell it, and where you hope it will go. You’ll have a partner as you navigate life transitions and circumstances, learn to better manage difficult thoughts and feelings, change patterns that no longer serve you, and improve relationships. As your unfoldment happens (and yes, it's always messy), you’ll have an ally in this incredibly difficult yet doable work.

I try to incorporate practical approaches and draw from a variety of modalities, including from ACT, CBT, person-centered, and mindfulness.
Life can often involve a series of setbacks, transitions, difficulties, and challenges that can cause us to feel stuck or lost. My aim is to help clients identify not only what they wish to change or problems they hope to address but also build self-acceptance and self-compassion. I have significant experience working with young adults and college-aged clients but also see adult and adolescent clients. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, identity exploration, grief/loss, or relationship concerns, I will collaborate with you to work towards your goals.

My clinical approach includes developing a comfortable, accepting relationship and utilizing cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, social skill development, and problem-solving methods.
I have provided psychotherapy in my private practice since 2016 after 25 years working at the University of Illinois, McKinley Health Center, Mental Health Department. At McKinley I was a member of a clinical team that included three Psychiatrists, two Psychologists and two Clinical Social Workers. Many of my referrals have come from Physicians who I coordinate care with as we seek to add non-medicine coping skills for anxiety and mood management. While medications can be helpful, I believe it is important to address situational factors and build coping skills to more fully address my client's problems.

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
