Are you spiraling with "what if" questions, overthinking, and imagining worst case scenarios? Maybe you feel tempted to avoid situations that cause nervousness at best, or panic at worst. Anxiety can be all-consuming, negatively impacting your thoughts, feelings, behaviors and can even cause physical symptoms. If this weren't hard enough, your inner critic puts you down for having anxiety at all. You're not alone; in fact, anxiety is the most common mental health issue in the US. I want you to know learning how to overcome anxiety is well within reach. You reading this right now and seeking out support is a courageous first step.

Are you feeling sad, anxious or overwhelmed? How about feeling disconnected or having no purpose in life? I understand that coming to therapy can be scary. We can feel so vulnerable opening up to a stranger about our confusions, fears and insecurities. Therapy is a process of self-exploration, change and healing. The therapy process will help you in gaining greater awareness about yourself, your relationships, and situations you find yourself in. In therapy, you will learn skills for coping and discover solutions to your problems.

In these challenging times, I believe the exploration of our experience of being and the understanding of our longing for meaningful connections with others can be a driving force toward change. In our work in therapy we will deepen the understanding of yourself, discover what you want and need from others, and how to solve issues of the past that are still alive today. We will explore how old patterns get in the way, and work toward a personal narrative that is based in self-compassion, acceptance, and human connection.

Our capacity to connect, both with ourselves (i.e. our passions, feelings, and body) and with others, is crucial to our feelings of well-being. When we connect, we generally feel a sense of aliveness in ourselves and the world. When we can't connect, we feel anxious, isolated, empty, or depressed. I feel my job is to help clients to more fully connect to the range of their experiences. I help adults, adolescents, and couples explore why they lose connection. I help them identify, understand, and overcome the deep root of their disconnection. I help them find well-being, which gives me great joy.

I’ve helped thousands of clients cope with depression, anxiety, illness and relationships for over 25 years. I use cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and family systems therapies, but am flexible and personalize my approach for the specific situation and client needs. I work with individuals, families and couples, combining support, insight, cognitive and relaxation/imagery techniques. Trained as an undergraduate at Penn State, and at University of Texas at Austin for my masters, I’ve supervised and managed many psychotherapists at hospitals and mental health agencies.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
