My approach is to provide empathic, warm, and collaborative care. My goal is to meet you where you are. I want to understand your struggles as best I can, so we can start to navigate the path forward. I will listen openly and without judgment. I will provide a safe space for holding wherever you may be at this time. For some I may mostly be listening, for others I may offer creative problem solving approaches. We will work together to create a balance that is right for you. This is your journey. I am here to help.

Many people seek therapy to help overcome barriers to accomplishing their goals. Often the barriers are not of the client's making, but are caused by social factors or "isms." In my practice, I support and mentor clients with various mental health diagnoses in their efforts to manage and address the internal and external factors holding them back. Because I am an elder with lots of experience, I can often help clients find and/or choose among various resources to help them live well. I believe we all have the capacity to grow. Even if you have tried therapy before, it is worth exploring newer methods and approaches.

My clients tend to be people who want to feel more in control of their emotions, more effective at getting what they want, less stuck, more flexible, more connected and really just more at peace. They seek relief from patterns - sometimes chronic and severe, sometimes only subtly troublesome - of painful emotions, negative self-talk and thoughts, rumination, relationship instability and self sabotaging behaviors. Many of my clients tend to have had very painful formative or recent experiences of invalidation that have been difficult or confusing. https://insightgrouptherapy.com/christina-young-polony

You feel isolated and overwhelmed in your journey into parenthood. You may be fed up with feeling like you aren't in control of your life, feeling anxious or alone. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to live without feeling guilt and shame. You’re ready to feel connected to yourself and your loved ones again. Most of all, you’re ready to find a way to go through the parenthood transition feeling positive and empowered.

Life has never been particularly easy, but lately we are faced with additional stress. As a psychologist, I meet with men and women, couples and families who are coping with conflict in their marriages, conflicts with their children, financial pressures, and workplace stress. Things might seem so overwhelming that we despair of ever recapturing the happiness and optimism that we once might have had. I can show you ways to reduce your anxiety, and develop new coping strategies to improve interactions in your family, your relationships and your workplace. You can find confidence and recapture a sense of well being.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy offers the opportunity to explore your early relationships and old patterns that may be effecting your ability to feel the vibrance and creativity in your life. I focus on the uniqueness of each psychotherapeutic relationship to explore potential blind spots and areas that have been difficult for you to unravel. I work in a warm and engaging way to assist you in the depths of your self-exploration.

I'm a mother of two and a first-generation child of immigrants. In my practice I want you to make the most of your time with me. I work with a range of clients, from executives to college students. My office is tucked into hills and trees. Clients are from my town, Mill Valley, Sausalito, Kentfield, Tiburon, San Francisco and the South Bay. I Zoom too.

Feminist Therapists
How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
