We believe that your diagnosis does not define who you are. At Journey to Clarity Counseling we offer individual, couples, and family therapy to all ages. We start with gaining a deeper understanding of your life story. We don't just ask a list of questions to see if you meet the criteria for a diagnosis. We take the time to get to know YOU. We help you by exploring childhood experiences, generational trauma, family dynamics, self-worth, all areas of wellness, & more as they relate to daily functioning and quality of life. All of these factors are taken into consideration before a diagnosis is given (if needed).

I believe that the foundation of life starts with our family relationships. From the time we are young, our interactions with others create our beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These early childhood experiences help develop our personality and outlook on life. As we grow, it is important for us to keep in mind where we come from, who we are, and what we want in our future.

In my 36 years of practice, I've focused on being the best therapist I can be and have become a much more active one as I've come to appreciate the usefulness of evidence-based therapies as well a psychoanalytic psychotherapy, all tailored to the individual needs of my clients and, if applicable, their families. Often people can be too hard on themselves, think badly of themselves, get easily overwhelmed, have angry outbursts, feel depressed, worry a lot, feel bothered by painful past events, feel stuck, and not know how to cope. And, parents can try many things and end up feeling lost regarding their child's behavior problems.

I want to assist those that are seeking change and will be committed to the process. For example: 1. Grief and loss 2. Domestic Violence 3. Marriage and Divorce (to name a few) Their needs could include (but are not limited to): 1. Coping with the death of a loved one 2. Improving relationships 3. Setting realistic goals. I believe that individuals desire change but may lack clarity on how to make these adjustments. However, together we can make it happen.

Now more than ever taking good care of our mental health is important. I strive to create a safe and non- judgmental place where my clients may explore their feelings, work through past or present concerns, learn new coping skills, manage anxiety provoking thoughts and grow to be the best version of themselves. Therapy can seem like an overwhelming process and I am sure to meet the client where they are and work at the pace of their choosing.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
