My name is Toi-Shareema Grayson. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey. I am a proud Black African American raised by my mom, grandmother, uncle, and aunt, whom were all instrumental in my rearing. Surrounded by hard working family is where I gained my reliable work ethic, as well as my passion to work with people. Transitioning into counseling working directly with people just made sense to me. If you are ready to unpack your concerns, work through your challenges, set goals for yourself, and begin your healing process congratulations on taking your first step.

Struggling with feelings of loneliness and rejection is exhausting. No matter what you do, you never quite feel fully understood by the people in your life. Why is it so hard to connect? Constantly thinking and worrying about your romantic, social, or family life, you fear that you may not be enough just as you are. Communicating your needs and emotions is so challenging, especially since you aren’t always sure what it is you’re feeling. More than anything, you want to learn to put down your guard and truly let people into your life. Deep down, you know there's another way.

I understand how difficult it can be when you are torn between what your family wants and what you want for yourself.
You work hard in relationships and at the workplace to meet your own high standards. But feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction often creep up despite your accomplishments. Every time you achieve a goal, a fleeting sense of happiness is soon replaced by the familiar feelings of emptiness and anxiety. You long to approach challenging situations with increased flexibility and ease, to make decisions that you believe in and feel good about. Creating a sustained sense of meaning in life without reverting to the same, old cycle of despair seems far away, but actually, it's closer than you know. This is where therapy comes in.

For 15 years, I was a NYC public school teacher working in specialized high schools and that experience has informed my understanding of how our intersectional identities influence how comfortably we move in our world today. I believe that personal, cultural and societal narratives can influence who we are and what we believe we can achieve. I use an Anti-Bias Trauma informed lens to help all people navigate life’s provocations. I am also an avid gamer and use video & tabletop games, RPGs and other staples of Geek culture in my work with some clients to build empowering metaphors of their life experience.

I have a deep personal understanding of illness, loss, and family mental illness, and have done extensive consulting, research and writing about the role of empathy in times of difficulty.
Usually, the choice to pursue therapy comes at a time when we feel deeply disconnected, unable to re-center and re-connect on our own. Maybe the obligations you carry leave you exhausted and unfulfilled; perhaps it seems those you live with cannot really see you and don’t appreciate your efforts; or maybe your life has been turned upside-down by illness, the loss of a loved one, or a romantic break-up. Maybe you’re not sure why you feel off-balance, you just know something is wrong. Whatever your story, I’m so glad you’ve found your way here.

"I need help." As human beings, we all will say this phrase at some point in our lives. Acknowledging a need for help can be uncomfortable, painful or scary. Perhaps you've discovered that something is keeping you from being your best self. Or maybe your relationships, career, or family life is leaving you feeling depleted. Fortunately these struggles do not have to define who you are; change is possible and it can be a beautiful thing. Recognizing and building upon the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity and challenges has become a refined skill and passion of mine.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
