My patients come to treatment to open up repressed parts of themselves. Sometimes, my patients are struggling to integrate family backgrounds, religious,or cultural with their lives today. They have often succeeded in their professional lives but feel stuck in their romantic or interpersonal lives. My patients usually bring a curiosity about how their history effects their present lives. They are interested in engaging in a treatment which examines this closely in order to understand why they are feeling blocked and to open up a greater sense of inner freedom in order to live more meaningful and fuller lives.

I have been interested in family dynamics, trauma, and resilience for many years and am attuned to the challenges of opening up in therapy.
Our lives are woven with stories—the tales inherited from others (relatives, friends, social and professional circles) and the ones we craft for ourselves. Juggling familial duties, chronic pain, toxic environments, life or career transitions, the experience of loss, harassment, trauma, or cultural disconnection can deeply challenge our inner narrative, interfering with our ability to mend the threads of our stories, and flourish. In my practice, I assist patients in untangling their stories, finding new perspectives/meaning, and actively pursuing aspirations.

I come to practice with an integrated, flexible approach to treatment that considers how personal experience and family history, as well as constitutional profile, inform behavior, decisions, relationships as well as beliefs about oneself, others, the world and the future. I take a strength-based, collaborative approach to enhance an individual's sense of worth, vitality and efficacy and build healthy, gratifying relationships. My approach is integrative, exploring the psychological factors that contribute to distress while offering practical, logical strategies to restore balance, meaning and strength in a gentle, non-threatening environment.

We practice systemic therapy, which means that in counseling we consider how your unique biology and psychology— in addition to your relationship, sociocultural, and family-of-origin history—all contribute to your overall happiness.
You may feel like you’re the only one experiencing sexual challenges in your relationship, but difficulties like low desire, painful sex, or premature ejaculation are more common than you think. If you’ve been afraid to talk about your sexual challenges, you probably feel alone, overwhelmed, and unsure about what to do. If you’re in a relationship, you and your partner may have stopped talking about sex, deepening the disconnection and feelings of loneliness and shame. Fortunately, there is a way out of this negative cycle, and you can create the sex life and relationship you desire.

Couples and individuals seeking therapy deserve tremendous respect. In my work with relationships, I offer Emotion Focus Therapy (EFT) to help both partners to get unstuck from the repetitive patterns of emotional disconnect, that lead to fights or deadening silence. As a couples' therapist with an advanced training in Gottman therapy, I integrate it in my work when needed. My approach to individual treatment is Internal Family Systems (IFS) where you get to know your inner world, become more present, less reactive, and more capable of self-healing. I work both with monogamous and consensual non-monogamous relationships.

Relationships with children, grandchildren, spouses or partners, family and friends tend to shift.
When life feels difficult, talking to a friend or loved one may be helpful. But when life starts to feel overwhelming, or even senseless, talking to a sensitive, caring professional who is trained to listen and knows what to listen for can help understand our feelings and how to deal with them. I have years of experience with illness, loss and the need to find purpose. My emphasis is on two-way communication, not just through words, but through feelings and actions. I will work with you to help you gain insight into yourself and others, and live as satisfying and productive a life as possible--I know it's not easy.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
