At East Bay Center for Anxiety Relief, we work with adults, children, teens, couples, and families. We also facilitate periodic groups focused on communication skills, social skills, anxiety, depression, and working women. We strive for mindful, efficient, and effective therapy. Our clinicians are trained in research-based models such as TEAM-CBT and Gottman couples/ family models. We work a bit differently than more traditional practices. We don’t cram an hour of therapy into 50 minutes. Instead, we provide full 60-, 75-, or 90-minute sessions.

I work with children, adolescents, and adults as well as providing couples and family therapy.
When it comes to getting help for yourself or your family, finding a therapist you feel comfortable with is an important first step. I create a supportive and authentic environment where we can focus on your individual goals so you can move forward with your life. I take a practical and eclectic approach to therapy, incorporating family systems theory, evidenced based practices, and mindfulness practices into sessions, and work to help you feel better as quickly as possible.

With that as an essential goal, I find Internal Family Systems, psychodynamic and attachment work, Somatic Experiencing and ACT as excellent tools for becoming who we feel we actually are.
As a therapist, I am concerned with the emotional or physical injuries that have happened to us. I’m interested in harm that is family based, societally based, or both. I see the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that don't serve us well now as having been required in our past for survival in a traumatic environment. Many of my clients are neurodivergent, and have been subject to harm ranging from ongoing lack of support to severe abuse because of this.

When treating families with children from 3 to 12, I may suggest Filial Therapy, a highly effective combination of play and family therapy.
When individuals, couples, families or children make the difficult decision to come to therapy they are usually feeling stuck and often scared. Each of us has our own strength and wisdom which we don't see when we are troubled. My goal is for us to work together to rediscover those qualities. I use a cattail plant as a symbol of how I see therapy. Why? Cattails are found stuck in a marsh and often regarded as weeds. But when looked at carefully they are graceful and strong. Let me help you find your strength and grace.

I work with children ranging in age from kindergarten through middle school, as well as parents and caregivers. I can help children who are facing challenges around anxiety, life transitions, losses, self-esteem, and relationships with peers and/or family members. I know that children are most effectively treated when their parents are engaged in the treatment process. The degree to which parents are included depends on each child’s needs. I am also happy to provide parent consultation as the primary intervention if a parent is interested in trying that approach instead of individual child therapy.

You don't have to struggle with this alone- let's get your family to a better place.
How do I help my adolescent with their school problems? How can we reduce our conflicts at home? Behavior problems often arise for smart, sensitive children who struggle to recognize their own intelligence, strengths, and specific learning style. Are you are hoping to help your child build their confidence, self-regulation and advocacy skills? I can partner with them, and with you, to help them increase motivation and self-esteem and overcome behavior challenges.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
