If your family struggles with communication difficulties, behavioral challenges, or overcoming the trauma of abuse or substance use disorder, family therapy may help.
Is your family struggling to connect? Do you feel like the older your children get, the more difficult it is to communicate? Has your family experienced domestic violence or substance abuse? You want a harmonious home with shared experiences that foster close relationships. Maybe you feel lost and unsure of what to do. Family therapy can help your family connect through effective communication, boundary setting, and trauma healing.

I offer therapy for individuals and couples, family education, and recovery coaching.
One of the most courageous things we can do is begin to understand our own story. It is also the most liberating. We are not designed to do this alone. I understand how hard it can be to reach out and ask for help. I work alongside individuals and families to help navigate the throes of addiction and mental health challenges. I wholeheartedly believe in the power of connection, healing, and repair both individually and systemically.

I have also trained in family-based interventions for adolescent eating disorders.
I am a warm, straightforward therapist focused on providing effective treatment. I work to connect genuinely with each of my patients because I believe the first component of effective treatment is the formation of a trusting, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship. With this relationship as the foundation, we can then collaboratively determine your goals and take measurable steps to achieving the change you want in your life. I specialize in the treatment of adolescents and young adults struggling with depression, sexual and gender identity, suicidality, emotion regulation, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship problems, family issues, academic and occupational stress, and life transitions.

Do you have a core sense that you aren't good enough or that you don't quite feel whole? Maybe you have tried therapy, mindfulness, or read self-help books in the past. Nonetheless, you continue feeling anxious, tense, on edge, or worried as to how you can keep this up for another day, just barely holding it all together enough to get by. Maybe you have conflict in your relationships, problems at work, or a great sense of inner turmoil. The truth is, it doesn't have to be that way.

Hi, my name is Shane, and I am the owner of Anchored Soul Counseling. We work best with patients who recognize that they are not living the life they want or deserve. They are willing to begin to open up and attempt to be vulnerable, even if it is slowly. Our approach to treatment is warm, relaxed and person-centered. We are very patient and work to meet patients where they are at in their journey, not where they, "should be". We strive to treat my patients with compassion and acceptance. We value each person as an expert in their own life. Each person and their story is different and requires specific, rounded care.

We all know life can be tough, and this is especially true for adolescents and young adults in our increasingly turbulent world. My practice, Arete Psychological Services, is designed to address the special needs of adolescents, young adults, and their families. In the spirit of this idea, I am deeply committed to assisting young people capitalize on what is healthy and resourceful in their nature, in enabling them to use their existing abilities more effectively, to develop new life skills, and mature in positive directions.

You are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and tired. Simple tasks like showering, eating, and leaving the house are enough to make you jump back in bed. Ugh, I know how that feels. I also know how amazing it feels to get through difficult periods in life. Getting better isn't always easy, but I've found that with the right support, it IS possible. It takes strength to admit that you are struggling so I truly mean it when I say "Great job at taking the first step!" You do NOT have to do this alone. We welcome the opportunity to support you with whatever your struggles may be.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
