I view counseling as a partnership between the client and myself. I see my role as enabling people to explore ways to heal from emotional hurt, to discover pathways toward more effective and positive ways of thinking, and to adopt helpful patterns of behavior. Through counseling, I help people recognize their strengths; encourage individuals to take responsibility for their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors; and assist people in making and implementing effective decisions. Using an integrative approach to counseling, the techniques I use are cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, solution-focused, and interpersonal. I utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy and family system theories.

I see therapy as a collaborative process between client and therapist, each with different areas of expertise. I believe the goal of therapy is not only to solve "problems" but to help clients grow and find balance and wholeness. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) , a method of therapy that numerous research studies have shown to be effective in the treatment of trauma. It has been shown to be as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy and often provides relief in fewer sessions.

I employ evidence-based methods such as EMDR, CBT, DBT, and narrative therapy to help clients heal from trauma and cope with anxiety and depression.
Things aren't right. You grapple with profound sadness, nightmares, and a feeling of dread when contemplating past events. Despite attempts at improvement, your situation remains stagnant. Your social life is struggling and relationships are strenuous. You have aspirations and goals for the future yet are uncertain about how to navigate past your history. Or maybe you’re a like 20% of new parents and struggling with your mental health during pregnancy or the early years. I can provide insights into the brain differences associated with trauma, depression, and anxiety, & offer explanations for the emotions you are experiencing.

While I have expertise in utilizing multiple evidence based treatment interventions including EMDR, CBT, ACT and Mindfulness my primary approach is attachment based experiential psychotherapy.
Clients present with many concerns, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, and relationship issues to name a few. Everyone experiences emotional ups and downs, successes and failures. However, when one is stuck in the "downs" and the "failures" we may feel overwhelmed, anxious & depressed. Often one turns to unhealthy coping such as alcohol and drugs, eating, compulsive behaviors - shopping and exercising, isolation or avoidance. Untangling the unique threads of your life; and understanding how they affect you can be the beginning to feeling more in charge and living according to your values and desires.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
