I have worked with a diversity of populations during my 18 year career both in community with children and families and in an out patient setting with children and adults to the elderly. My experience lies with behavioral issues with children and family dynamics. Additionally, I have a specialization in substance abuse with a belief in harm reduction leading to abstinence. I have worked with many people of the LGBTQ community and specifically with the transgender population. In working with the LGBTQ community, I also have become versed in people living alternative lifestyles.

I believe that those in distress, grieving, angry or overwhelmed do not usually want a person to watch them drown, they want to be given a life preserver. With this approach I pro-actively educate, support, encourage and empower my clients through their personal and private choices, changes and challenges. I enjoy what I do because I come to the relationship with years of education, professional and personal experience as well as empathy, resourcefulness and compassion. Suppose you returned home one night to your "empty" house on a corner to find the door smashed open, and sounds of someone inside and things falling on the floor. Afraid, you walk around the corner where your neighbor then tells you she saw smoke coming from your window and the firemen are inside finding the cause. Your attitude toward the intruders completely changes when you understand their purpose. I give clients similar insight about the problems hurting them and their relationships. It's tragic to suffer and to fear solvable problems because you don't understand them.

Having worked in drug abuse prevention and as a middle school social worker, I'm good at connecting with adolescents who are struggling to figure out who they are.
Are you and your significant other constantly arguing? Is your teenager going down the wrong path? Do you feel like everyone is always depending on you? Do you struggle to get out of bed sometimes? Are you afraid of losing your relationship? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, I am here to help. I have experience helping distressed families, working with couples who are breaking up, and improving parent-child relationships. I believe it's important to guide families even-handedly, not taking sides or making people feel guilty.

Over the 18 years in the behavioral health field, I've attributed my growth and experience to all of the clients I've seen. One of the most difficult aspects of therapy is having to be vulnerable. In order to be vulnerable a client must feel seen, heard, respected and safe. I've worked in multiple settings such as school, corporate healthcare, home, clinic and private practice. I've worked with families, individually, with children, teen and adults with addiction, behavioral health needs and disabilities. Mostly utilizing a strengths based and family systems perspective/model.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
