I have experience with adults suffering from relationship problems, trauma, life transitions, depression, anxiety, addictions, and self-esteem issues.
"The truth will set you free" is apt in describing the key to mental health, but many of us need help before we can handle the truth. Anxiety, anger, depression, relationship issues and addictions are signs of our mind's defenses obscuring our truth. I support clients wanting to change by helping them identify their truths, increase coping skills and build self-awareness so that they have the power to transform their lives into what they are meant to be.

Subsequently I became a certified IMAGO therapist and I enjoy working with couples.
I am interested in cultivating a gentle curiosity, attentiveness and, if possible, a sense of humor in the clients I am privileged to meet. Our family experience informs the way we experience ourselves and how we make our way in relationships. I'm interested in exploring practical avenues for effecting communication that includes mindful awareness, appropriate boundaries and empathic connection. As reactivity is practically identified and calming is learned, I want to leaven the re-discovery or re-defining of a life narrative where, courage, integrity and joy are woven in. I want to encourage growth in those areas where healing is needed.

Collaborating with individuals and couples, I have seen significant improvement in the quality of their relationships and a marked decrease in their anxiety and depression.
For more than twenty years, clients have taught me about frustration, worry, sadness and striving to feel better. I work with clients who want to be happier and less anxious, who want to improve their performance, and who want to interact positively in important relationships. Working together, we identify and increase patterns of behavior and ways of thinking that are most productive, eliminating unhealthy behaviors. I also share tools for growth, updating my clients about research findings pertinent to their concerns. Solution-oriented therapy allows clients to set and achieve their goals, becoming happier and more optimistic in the process.

Day to day life can be exhausting, stressful and anxiety inducing. It is easier said than done to “enjoy the little things in life,” when we have so many outside pressures weighing on us. When we feel overwhelmed by these pressures our mental health and personal relationships can suffer. When our environment seems too overwhelming we can find ourselves getting stuck repeating the same non-productive behaviors. Children seem unmanageable, we don't feel as connected to our partners or spouses anymore and we don't even recognize ourselves. I hope to assist you and yours in managing difficult times and strengthening your relationships.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
