I know how difficult it can be to find someone who understands what you are going through. I base my approach to therapy on the empathy I’ve gained through my own recovery story as well as helping hundreds of individuals/couples deal with challenges like sexual addiction/compulsivity. People leave my office feeling empowered with new knowledge and skills that will help them move forward. Email me to schedule a free consultation today.

As a dual diagnosis/co-occurring psychotherapist, (licensed mental health counselor and licensed substance use disorder professional) my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. It is often sought when life challenges arise, when our ability to cope with daily life is compromised, or when relationships begin to suffer. Counseling is a journey that may involve some discomfort as you seek to understand and challenge your most inner thoughts and beliefs. Engagement in counseling is designed to bring about changes to your life's perspectives and consequently the decisions you make as well as the behaviors you elicit.

As we encounter life's various problems, we occasionally find that professional help might be useful. I work with people who are looking for that additional professional assistance. Some of the most common reasons people come to work with me are depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and anger management, among several others. I also work with couples. For the first 15 years of my career I also worked training doctoral students on how to be therapists while maintaining a private practice on the side. This has given me invaluable insight into the therapy work I do now in my full-time private practice.

If what you are doing with your life and relationships only results in a mess, you can learn to change all that to your satisfaction. I have the skills and experience to teach and support you in the process. The process involves learning who you are (how you feel, what your needs are), how to expose and change self beliefs that are misdirecting your life, how to put words to it all, and finally learn how to express yourself in a meaningful, constructive way to others. Clients tell me how much they appreciate their new self-understanding and relationship skills.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
