Individuals and couples who come to me are usually feeling frustrated and stuck in a variety of ways, and are unable to see how to move ahead. We begin by working together to find a shared understanding of their difficulties from which we chart a path toward constructive change. My listening with respect and understanding can be helpful in itself. The assistance of a trained eye can reveal patterns of behavior and emotional reactions which are self defeating for my clients. Constructive alternatives to these patterns can then be considered and practiced with my guidance.
Some discussion of ones past experience often reveals wounds that have been reactivated by present life stresses. Seen in this context, current constructive alternatives can become more clear. Couples learn to appreciate and creatively address their their newly understood individual differences in how they approach feelings and conflicts and values.
More specifically, individuals typically consult me about: depression, anxiety, grief, relationship problems, diffuse unhappiness, low self esteem, destructive expression of anger, procrastination, addictions, and coping with medical illness. Couples, in addition to the above issues, bring: communication and closeness issues, chronic conflicts (money, sex, chores, etc.), parenting struggles, and infidelity.
